How OSHC Pricing Works

The Visa Length Trap

The Department of Home Affairs requires every Subclass 500 visa holder to hold OSHC for the entire intended stay, plus a short buffer past the course end date. This calculator applies a flat approximate buffer per study type — about one week for ELICOS/VET, one and a half months for bachelor/master degrees, and six months for PhD candidates — rather than the exact end-of-month date rules. Visa applications are routinely refused for under-purchasing cover by even a single week.

This calculator multiplies provider annualised premiums by the compliant fraction (months / 12), then surfaces the cheapest legal option across the five approved insurers.

Standard vs. Budget Policies

Only "Standard" or higher OSHC products provide the full statutory benefits required for visa compliance: hospital, medical, ambulance, prosthetics and pharmaceutical at the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee. "Budget" or "Essentials" tiers cap private hospital benefits at the public-hospital shared-room rate and impose a 12-month waiting period on pregnancy, psychiatric and rehabilitation services.

Obscure Trap: Couple and Family tiers require both partners to be listed on the same policy with valid visa-linked dates — switching tiers mid-policy almost always triggers waiting periods to restart.
