How the Skilled Migration Points Test Works

Australia's General Skilled Migration program (Subclass 189 Independent, 190 State Nominated, and 491 Regional Provisional) uses a single statutory points-based assessment. You must reach a minimum of 65 points just to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI), but in saturated occupation pools the practical invitation cut-off frequently runs 85–95 points.

Points stack across age, English, skilled work history, qualifications, and several Australian study and partner attributes. The tracker reflects the published Schedule 6D criteria of the Migration Regulations 1994.

The Specialist STEM Double-Gate

The 10-point Specialist Education bonus is one of the most misclaimed lines. It requires both a Master's by Research or Doctorate qualification AND that the field be in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or specified ICT). Coursework Master's degrees and non-STEM disciplines are excluded. Because this tool groups Bachelor's and Master's into a single education tier, it can only confirm the research-degree requirement at the Doctorate level β€” selecting any qualification below Doctorate disqualifies the bonus here.

Australian Study Requirement Anchor

Several bonuses (Regional Study, Specialist Education, Professional Year) are legally anchored to first having satisfied the Australian Study Requirement: at least two academic years of CRICOS-registered study completed in Australia. If you cannot meet this anchor, dependent bonuses are mathematically blocked by this tracker.
