Understanding Dutch Studiefinanciering

The Performance Grant (Prestatiebeurs)

The basic grant (basisbeurs) and the supplemental grant (aanvullende beurs) in the Netherlands are initially awarded as an interest-bearing loan. However, they are fully converted into a **non-repayable gift** if you successfully obtain your diploma within 10 years of commencing your studies. The student travel product (studentenreisproduct) falls under this same performance rule.

If you do not graduate within 10 years, the entire accumulated balance, including travel costs, must be repaid with accrued interest.

Parental Income Thresholds & Deductions

The supplemental grant is calculated based on the combined parental taxable income from two years prior (e.g., 2024 income for academic year 2026). The "Vrije Voet" threshold grants full support to lower-income households (€ 41,500.60 for HBO/WO and € 46,305.40 for MBO). Above this boundary, the grant decreases linearly based on an official statutory discount rate (13.6% for HBO/WO, and 26.0% for MBO).

Obscure Policy Traps: If you have siblings currently studying who do NOT receive a supplemental grant, your parents\' statutory annual contribution capacity is lowered by € 363.00 per sibling (or € 726.00 if living together). This decreases their expected contribution and thereby increases your supplemental grant.
