Understanding Binding Study Advice (BSA)

In the Netherlands, higher education institutions monitor first-year performance via the **Bindend Studieadvies (BSA)** mechanism under statutory Dutch law. First-year Bachelor students are typically assigned a credit norm (ranging commonly between 36 and 48 European Credits (EC) out of 60 total) that they MUST achieve.

Falling short of this benchmark triggers a negative BSA, which carries a legal exclusion from re-enrolling in that exact program at the university, generally lasting **three academic years**.

The "Triple-Gate Lock" Trap

Many programs enforce compound gates rather than aggregate totals. You may hit your 45 EC aggregate target but still face mandatory dismissal if you fail key "gatekeeper" core modules. This tracker calculates both credit totals and mandatory course requirements to prevent false negatives.

Personal Circumstances Protection

Under statutory law (WHW Article 7.8b), universities are legally obliged to weigh personal circumstances such as prolonged illness, disabilities, or special family obligations. If you encounter unforeseen hardships, report these to your Academic Advisor immediately before formal BSA letters are issued.
