Professional Certifications Worth Pursuing Alongside a Degree in Africa: ACCA, CIMA and PMP
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Education Planning
ACCA, CIMA and PMP are globally recognized certifications African students often add to a degree to stand out in accounting, finance and project management roles.
💵 ACCA and CIMA are UK-based accounting and finance qualifications, with fees paid in GBP.
🎓 PMP is a US-based project management certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI).
All three combine exams with a verified practical experience requirement before full membership.
Many African universities offer exemptions from early ACCA or CIMA exams for accredited degrees.
Distance study lets students prepare while working, without leaving their country.
Why add a certification to a degree
A degree gets you into the job market. A recognized professional certification tells an employer you can perform at an international standard, which matters if you want to work for a multinational firm, an audit practice, a bank, or a project-driven organization anywhere in Africa or abroad. ACCA, CIMA and PMP are three of the most requested certifications in job postings across African finance, accounting and project management roles.
ACCA: chartered accounting
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA ) is a UK-based qualification recognized across Africa, with a strong presence in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Its exams sit in three stages: Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional, alongside a separate Ethics and Professional Skills module.
Passing every exam is not enough for full membership. Students need three years of relevant, verified work experience, known as the Practical Experience Requirement (PER), before ACCA admits them as members. Many accounting and finance degrees at African universities carry exemptions that let graduates skip the Applied Knowledge exams and start at Applied Skills, which shortens the overall path.
CIMA: management accounting
The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA ) focuses on management accounting rather than audit and external financial reporting, and suits students aiming for finance business partner or in-house management roles rather than public accounting firms. Its structure runs from the Certificate in Business Accounting through Operational, Management and Strategic levels, each closing with a case study exam that tests applied judgment rather than memorized rules.
Like ACCA, CIMA requires verified practical experience before full membership. CIMA now sits alongside the CGMA designation through its partnership with the American Institute of CPAs, which extends its recognition into multinational employers with a strong US link as well as UK-linked ones.
PMP: project management
The Project Management Professional (PMP ) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) targets people who already run or contribute heavily to projects, not fresh graduates. To sit the exam you need either a four-year degree plus 36 months leading projects, or a secondary diploma plus 60 months leading projects, along with 35 hours of formal project management education.
This makes PMP a certification to plan for a few years into a career rather than add straight out of university. It carries weight in construction, telecoms, oil and gas, NGOs and IT delivery roles common across African economies.
Comparing the three
| Certification | Best for | Experience needed for full status |
|---|---|---|
| ACCA | Audit, tax, financial accounting | 36 months relevant work (PER) |
| CIMA | Management accounting, finance business partnering | Verified practical experience through employer sign-off |
| PMP | Project management leadership | 36-60 months leading projects, depending on your degree |
Which one fits your goal
Choose ACCA if you want a career in audit, tax or external financial reporting, or plan to work at an accounting firm.
Choose CIMA if you see yourself inside a company's finance team, advising on budgets and strategy rather than reviewing accounts.
Choose PMP once you already lead or coordinate projects and want formal recognition for that experience.
Check which certifications your specific employer or target industry values most before committing time and money to one.
Planning around cost and study time
All three certifications charge an exam fee per sitting, plus a one-time registration or application fee and an ongoing subscription once you hold student membership. ACCA and CIMA fees are paid in GBP directly to the awarding body in the UK, and PMP fees are paid in USD to PMI, with a reduced rate for PMI members. Fees change periodically, so check the official ACCA, CIMA and PMI fee pages before you budget, rather than relying on a figure from a course provider or a friend who qualified years earlier.
Study while working wherever possible. All three allow distance and self-paced preparation through approved learning providers, so you do not need to travel abroad or stop earning to qualify.
