How IELTS Works

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized English proficiency test accepted worldwide for education, immigration, and professional certification.

The test assesses your ability to communicate across listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The total duration is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, and your overall band score is calculated from the average of all sections.

Academic vs. General Training

Academic Module

Best for higher education admissions and professional registration. It tests your capacity to study or train in English at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.

General Training Module

Designed for migration to major English-speaking countries, as well as secondary education and work experience. It focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.

How Your Band Score Is Calculated

Your overall IELTS band score is calculated by taking the average of your four section scores and rounding to the nearest 0.5. If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band.

For Listening and Reading, enter your raw correct answers (out of 40) and the calculator converts them to a band using indicative British Council / IDP conversion tables. Listening uses the same table for both modules, while Reading uses a separate table for Academic and General Training. Writing and Speaking are graded as bands by examiners, so enter those directly.

Formula: (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4 = Overall Band

Example 1 (Rounding Up): 6.5, 6.5, 5.0, 7.0 = Average 6.25 ➔ 6.5

Example 2 (Rounding Down): 6.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 = Average 6.5 ➔ 6.5

Rounding Summary

Ends in .25 Rounds up to .50
Ends in .75 Rounds up to next whole
Ends in .125 Rounds down to .00
Ends in .625 Rounds down to .50

How to Prepare for IELTS

  • 1. Practice Daily: Take official practice tests to familiarize yourself with the timing and layout of each section.
  • 2. Analyze Mistakes: Focus on understanding why answers are correct or incorrect rather than just checking your overall score.
  • 3. Boost Vocabulary & Grammar: Expand your use of uncommon words, correct spelling, and appropriate sentence structures.
  • 4. Learn Time Management: Each section has strict time limits; practice answering questions within these bounds.
  • 5. Work on Speaking & Pronunciation: Record yourself speaking to improve fluency, sentence stress, and coherence.
  • 6. Review Writing Styles: Understand how to interpret charts/graphs (Academic Task 1) and master formal essays (Task 2).
