ACCA Qualification Path for Malaysian Accounting Students: Exemptions and Career Options

Malaysian accounting graduates from an accredited local degree can get up to 9 ACCA paper exemptions, leaving only the 4 Strategic Professional papers before qualifying for ACCA membership.
💵 MIA members get a blanket 9-paper ACCA exemption plus waived exemption and registration fees under the MIA-ACCA partnership, running until 23 May 2027
Only MIA members can practice as public accountants in Malaysia
ACCA has over 47,000 members and students in Malaysia
🎓 ACCA also requires 36 months of relevant practical experience (PER) and an ethics module
How ACCA and a Malaysian Accounting Degree Fit Together
ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is built from three exam levels: Applied Knowledge (3 papers), Applied Skills (6 papers) and Strategic Professional (2 compulsory papers plus 2 chosen from 4 options). On top of the exams, you complete the Ethics and Professional Skills module and 36 months of supervised relevant work experience, known as the Practical Experience Requirement (PER).
Graduates of an accredited Malaysian accounting degree from a public or private university typically qualify for up to 9 exemptions, covering the entire Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels, according to ACCA Malaysia . That leaves the 4 Strategic Professional papers, the ethics module and the PER to complete full membership. Not every accounting program carries the same exemptions, so check your specific degree on ACCA's exemption calculator before you register.
The MIA-ACCA Partnership
ACCA and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) run a Strategic Partnership Agreement, in force until 23 May 2027, that gives eligible MIA members a blanket exemption of nine ACCA papers. Under this agreement, ACCA waives the exemption fees for those nine papers and the initial registration fee, a package worth roughly GBP 1,031, about RM 6,000, per ACCA's published figures.
In Malaysia, only MIA members are permitted to practice as public accountants. Because of this, many students combine an accounting degree, ACCA membership and eventual MIA membership rather than treating ACCA as a standalone route.
Career Options After ACCA
ACCA members in Malaysia commonly work in audit and assurance at Big Four and mid-tier firms, corporate finance, tax advisory and internal audit roles inside multinational companies based in Kuala Lumpur and other regional hubs. As of 2024, ACCA counts over 47,000 members and students in Malaysia, giving you a large local professional network to draw on.
ACCA membership is recognized by employers in many countries beyond Malaysia, which supports a move into regional or international finance roles later in your career, alongside or instead of the domestic MIA practice route.
How to Start While Studying
Register with ACCA online and confirm which exemptions your specific accounting degree program qualifies for, since the count depends on your university's curriculum and its accreditation status, not on the accounting degree label alone. Once you start working, log your hours toward the 36-month PER from day one rather than waiting until after you finish your exams. If your longer-term goal includes practicing as a public accountant inside Malaysia, plan your MIA membership application alongside your ACCA papers rather than after you finish them.
