Addis Ababa University reserves on-campus housing for full-time undergraduates admitted under the government-sponsored regular program. Ethiopia's public university system covers tuition and housing costs for these students under the cost-sharing scheme, where you repay part of the cost after you graduate and start earning. This housing benefit ties to your admission category, not to your grades or how far your family lives from Addis Ababa.

If you are a self-sponsored, evening, weekend, extension or distance-learning student, AAU does not assign you a dorm room. These programs run alongside the regular schedule but sit outside the government sponsorship, so you arrange your own rental in the city for the length of your studies.

How the assignment process works

You do not choose your dorm block or roommates directly. After each academic term's registration closes, AAU's student services office at your campus posts room and building assignments, usually grouped by college and year of study. Students from the same college tend to end up in the same building, since it keeps you close to your lecture halls and labs.

Because assignment follows registration rather than arrival order, finishing your registration early does not guarantee a better room. Check the notice boards or student portal at your campus's registrar and student dean's office once registration for the term closes, and bring your student ID and admission letter when you collect your room key.

Sharing a room

Dorm rooms at AAU are shared, and you are placed with other students of the same sex from your college. You will not usually get to pick who you share with, since the office fills rooms by list order rather than by request. Bedding, storage space and study areas are shared, so agree early with roommates on a cleaning and quiet-hours routine.

If you are placed far from your department

AAU runs several campuses across Addis Ababa, including Sidist Kilo, Arat Kilo, Amist Kilo and Akaki, and each one generally serves specific colleges. If your dorm sits in a different part of the city from where your classes run, walking between them daily is unrealistic, so raise the problem right away rather than waiting out the term.

Go to your campus Student Dean's office with your class schedule and dorm assignment slip and ask for a transfer. The fastest fix is usually a like-for-like swap with another student whose situation is the reverse of yours, since the office has to keep every room filled and cannot simply move you into a building that is already at capacity. Medical conditions or disabilities that make distance a real problem get priority handling, so put these in writing when you submit your request.

What is included

Housing costs for government-sponsored students fold into your overall cost-sharing arrangement rather than arriving as a separate rent bill each term. Basic furniture, such as a bed frame and desk, comes with the room, but bring your own mattress cover, blankets and study lamp, since supplies vary by building and by how recently a dorm has been renovated.
