Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Admission Guide for UTME and Direct Entry Candidates

ABU Zaria admits through JAMB UTME plus a post-UTME screening, and through Direct Entry for IJMB, A-Level and ND/HND holders straight into 200 level. ABU itself hosts an IJMB study centre many Direct Entry candidates pass through first.
🎓 List ABU as your first choice on your UTME form and choose your course carefully.
📩 Clear ABU's UTME benchmark, then register for post-UTME screening on the ABU admissions portal.
ABU ranks candidates by an aggregate of UTME and post-UTME/O-level performance.
Direct Entry applicants with IJMB, A-Level, ND or HND apply through JAMB's DE portal into 200 level.
ABU only considers candidates who list it as their first choice institution on JAMB.
Two routes into ABU Zaria
Ahmadu Bello University admits new undergraduates mainly through UTME plus a post-UTME screening exercise, and separately through Direct Entry for candidates with IJMB, A-Level, ND, HND or NCE qualifications straight into 200 level. Both processes start on JAMB's UTME/DE portal before you move to ABU's own admissions system.
Step 1: Register for UTME and pick ABU as first choice
Create your JAMB profile during the UTME registration window and select Ahmadu Bello University as your first choice institution. ABU only considers candidates who name it as first choice, so listing it as a second or later choice removes you from consideration even with a strong score. Choose your course carefully and enter O-level subjects (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) that match your department's subject combination requirement.
Step 2: Meet ABU's UTME benchmark
ABU sets a minimum UTME score each cycle before it opens post-UTME screening registration. Past cycles have used a general floor around 180 out of 400 for most courses, with competitive departments such as Medicine, Pharmacy and Engineering setting a higher figure. Confirm the current cycle's benchmark and departmental cut-off list on the ABU admissions portal , since both change every session.
Step 3: Register for post-UTME screening
Once your UTME score clears ABU's benchmark, log in to the ABU admissions portal with your JAMB registration number, pay the screening fee, and submit your O-level results and passport photograph. Attend any physical or CBT screening stage your department schedules, and bring your original O-level result and UTME slip for verification.
Step 4: Aggregate scoring and the admission list
ABU ranks candidates within each department using an aggregate that combines your UTME score with your post-UTME/O-level performance. Departments admit down this ranked list until seats fill, and you accept or reject any offer through the JAMB CAPS portal. Respond promptly, since an unanswered offer can go to another candidate.
Direct Entry and IJMB
Ahmadu Bello University hosts one of Nigeria's IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) study centres through its School of Preliminary Studies, so many Direct Entry candidates complete their IJMB programme at ABU itself before applying for Direct Entry into 200 level. If you hold IJMB, Cambridge A-Level, NCE, ND or HND results, register through JAMB's Direct Entry portal separately from UTME, list ABU and your course, and confirm your department accepts your specific qualification and grade combination, since DE admission runs on available slots rather than a fixed cutoff.
ABU's campus structure
ABU runs two main campuses, Samaru and Kongo, in Zaria, Kaduna State, alongside a teaching hospital campus for clinical years in Medicine. Confirm which campus hosts your department, since Samaru and Kongo sit several kilometers apart and this affects your accommodation choice.
When ABU releases admission lists
ABU publishes its admission lists in batches on the JAMB CAPS portal as each department finishes ranking its post-UTME screening results, spread across the months leading up to the start of the academic session. Check CAPS regularly during this period instead of waiting for a personal notification, since ABU does not contact every candidate individually.
Choosing your course wisely
Competition varies sharply between ABU's departments. Medicine, Pharmacy, Law and popular Engineering options draw far more applicants than available seats, pushing their post-UTME and aggregate cut-offs above the general benchmark. If your UTME score sits close to the floor, a less oversubscribed department in the same faculty gives you a more realistic path to admission in the same session.
After you gain admission
Once ABU admits you, accept the offer on the JAMB CAPS portal first, then complete ABU's own registration steps, which typically include biometric capture, payment of acceptance and tuition fees, and course registration for your first semester. A CAPS acceptance alone does not finish your admission, so follow through with ABU's own deadlines.
