The Baccalaureat exam

Algeria's Baccalaureat (BAC) is the national secondary school exit exam, set and organized by the Office National des Examens et Concours (ONEC) under the Ministry of National Education. It is graded out of 20 and comes in several streams, including Sciences, Mathematiques, Techniques Mathematiques, Gestion et Economie, Lettres, Langues Etrangeres, and Philosophie. Your stream determines which subjects carry the heaviest coefficients in your final average, and it also shapes which university fields you can realistically aim for afterward.

Passing the BAC alone does not place you in a university program. Once results are out, you move into a separate national process, orientation universitaire, run by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which is what actually decides which institution and specialty you attend.

How the orientation system works

After BAC results are published, the ministry opens a national digital orientation portal where every new bachelier registers online and submits a ranked list of preferred programs and institutions, called voeux. You typically get multiple choices, ordered from most to least preferred, across universities and specialties open to your stream.

The system then matches these preferences against your BAC average, applying subject-specific coefficients tied to each target program, alongside the number of available seats (quotas) in each specialty nationwide. Competitive fields such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and top engineering programs require higher averages and strong results in the subjects most relevant to that field, since seats are limited relative to demand. You are not guaranteed your first choice even with a solid average if a program is oversubscribed that cycle.

2025 cycle timeline

For the 2025/2026 academic year, preinscription opened online on July 22, 2025, and ran through July 26, according to Algerian press coverage including DK News . Students then confirmed their preinscription from July 27-29. Orientation results, meaning each student's assigned university and program, were announced on August 5, 2025. Final registration at the assigned institution followed online from August 10-15, 2025.

Exact dates shift a little each year, so treat this as the general shape of the calendar rather than a fixed schedule. The process consistently runs in the weeks right after BAC results, with online preinscription, a results announcement roughly one to two weeks later, and a final registration window closing out the cycle.

Using the portal for more than orientation

The same national portal also gives students access to information on university services beyond program placement, including a space for career and training information tied to each specialty, and a channel to submit requests to the Office National des Oeuvres Universitaires (ONOU), which handles student accommodation and related university welfare services. Check your portal account after orientation results come out, since housing and service requests are often tied to the same login.

What to do before results

Research your target specialties and their typical entry coefficients before the preinscription window opens, since you will be ranking choices under time pressure once it does. List your voeux realistically, mixing a few competitive first choices with programs your BAC average comfortably qualifies you for, since an orientation list made up only of oversubscribed specialties raises your risk of an unwanted late placement in the final registration phase.
