AMCAS vs OMSAS: How the US and Ontario Medical School Applications Differ

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Sep 27, 2024 • Canadians Studying Abroad

TL;DR

AMCAS sends one primary application to every US medical school you pick, then each school usually sends you its own secondary essays. OMSAS collects your whole Ontario application, essays included, in a single submission with no secondary round.

  • 🎓 AMCAS: one primary application plus school-by-school secondaries

  • 📩 OMSAS: one submission, all schools, no secondaries

  • ⏱️ AMCAS opens in spring, OMSAS opens later in the year

  • 💵 Both charge a base fee plus a per-school fee, so applying wide costs more in either system

AMCAS vs OMSAS: How the US and Ontario Medical School Applications Differ

Two Different Ways to Reach the Same Goal

If you are applying to medical school in Ontario and in the United States at the same time, you are running two separate application machines side by side. AMCAS , run by the Association of American Medical Colleges, is the primary application service for almost every MD program in the US. OMSAS , run by the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, is the single portal for every Ontario medical school. The two systems ask for similar information but process it in different ways, and the differences change how you plan your year.

How AMCAS Is Built

AMCAS is a two-stage system. You submit one primary application listing every course you have taken, your personal statement, your activities list, and your letters of reference. AMCAS verifies your transcript against what you entered, then releases your application to every school you selected.

Most schools then send you a secondary application with school-specific essay prompts, often between one and six short essays per school. Some schools screen your primary application before deciding whether to send a secondary at all. This means your workload keeps growing through the summer as secondaries arrive, and a strong applicant to ten schools can end up writing dozens of extra essays.

AMCAS also requires you to enter every post-secondary course individually and match it to a subject category. This course-by-course entry is unique to AMCAS among the systems Canadian applicants use and takes real time to complete accurately.

Timeline

AMCAS opens for a new application cycle in spring, with submission usually possible a few weeks later. Verification of your coursework can take several weeks once you submit, and secondaries then arrive through the summer. Exact opening and closing dates shift slightly cycle to cycle, so confirm them on the AMCAS site for the year you apply.

How OMSAS Is Built

OMSAS is a single-stage system for Ontario's medical schools. You complete one file: transcripts from every post-secondary institution you attended, your autobiographical sketch or personal essays depending on the school, your references, and any school-specific supplementary forms, all inside the same OMSAS account. There is no secondary round. What you submit by the deadline is what every Ontario school reviews.

Because there is no secondary stage, OMSAS front-loads the writing. You draft your essays and sketches before you know which schools will move you forward, rather than after, as with AMCAS. Each Ontario medical school still applies its own weighting to GPA, MCAT, essays, and interview invites, so the shared file does not mean a shared decision.

Timeline

OMSAS opens for the medical school application later in the year than AMCAS and closes with a single hard deadline for documents and references. There is no rolling secondary period afterward. Check the current cycle's dates directly on the OMSAS page, since they can move by a few days year to year.

Fees

Both systems charge per school. AMCAS charges a fee for your first school choice and an additional fee for each school you add, with a fee assistance program for applicants who qualify. OMSAS charges an application fee that also scales with the number of Ontario schools you select. Applying broadly in either system adds up quickly, so confirm the current fee schedule on each service's own fee page before you set your school list.

What This Means for a Canadian Applicant

  • Draft your OMSAS essays and autobiographical sketch early, since there is no second chance to add material after submission.

  • Keep summer capacity free for AMCAS secondaries. They can arrive within days of each other from different schools with different deadlines.

  • Enter your AMCAS coursework carefully. Mismatched subject codes delay verification and push your file behind schools that submitted a clean file.

  • Track two separate reference systems. AMCAS letters and OMSAS references are not shared between the platforms.

Individual School Requirements Still Apply

Neither AMCAS nor OMSAS is the whole application. US schools layer their own secondary prompts, interview formats, and prerequisite rules on top of AMCAS, and Ontario schools layer their own supplementary essays and weighting formulas on top of OMSAS. Read each school's own admissions page before you finalize your list, since requirements differ even within the same application service.

References Work Differently Too

AMCAS uses a Letter Writer Application, where each recommender uploads a letter directly to your account and you assign it to specific schools, so different schools on your list can see different combinations of letters. OMSAS instead routes references through its own online reference system, where each referee submits directly to OMSAS and Ontario schools set their own rules on how many letters they want and from whom. Ask each of your referees which system to expect the request from, since the two portals contact them separately and on different timelines.

Interviews Come After Both Systems

Once a school moves you forward from either AMCAS or OMSAS, the interview stage is separate from the application service itself. Many US and Ontario medical schools use a multiple mini interview format, a series of short stations rather than one long conversation, though some schools still run traditional panel interviews. Confirm the interview format each school you are invited to actually uses, since it changes how you prepare.

More to Compare

  • AMCAS lets you assign different letters to different schools, OMSAS routes all references through its own portal by school-set rules.

  • Interview format depends on the individual school, not the application system, so confirm it separately once you get an invite.
