  • Part-time and reduced terms earn a smaller, prorated award

  • ⏱️ The award expires 7 years after you complete your term

  • You can earn up to 2 full-time-equivalent awards over a lifetime

AmeriCorps Service and the Segal Education Award

What counts as an AmeriCorps term of service

AmeriCorps places members in nonprofits, schools, and government agencies across the country for a defined term of service. A full-time term runs 1,700 hours, usually spread over 10 to 12 months. Programs also offer part-time and reduced-hour options with lower requirements and smaller benefits, so check a program's listing for its exact term length before you apply.

During service you receive a modest living allowance that varies by program and location, plus health coverage on most full-time assignments. The bigger financial payoff arrives after you finish: a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award .

How much the Segal Award is worth

The value of a full-time award equals the maximum Federal Pell Grant for the year your term of service is approved. For terms approved in 2025 or 2026, that ceiling is $7,395. If you serve part-time or in a reduced-hour term, AmeriCorps prorates the award to match the share of the full 1,700-hour term you complete.

Term typeHours requiredApproximate share of full award
Full-time1,700100%
Three-quarter time1,200About 71%
Half-time900About 53%
Reduced half-time675About 40%
Quarter-time450About 26%
Minimum-time300About 18%

The total value of all your Segal Awards over a lifetime is capped at 2.0 full-time awards, even if you serve more than one term.

How to use the award

Once you finish your term, AmeriCorps deposits the award into your National Service Trust account. From there, payments go straight to a college, university, or vocational school that participates in federal student aid programs, or toward a qualified federal student loan such as a Direct Loan, subsidized or unsubsidized Stafford Loan, or Perkins Loan. Private loans do not qualify.

The award counts as taxable income in the year you use it, so budget for that when you request a payment. If you plan to apply it to a loan that also qualifies for Public Service Loan Forgiveness , check with your loan servicer first, since paying down a balance with the Segal Award reduces what forgiveness later cancels.

Deadlines and limits to plan around

You have 7 years from the date you complete your term to spend the award, after which it expires. AmeriCorps grants extensions only for documented, compelling reasons, such as active military service or a serious illness, so treat the 7-year window as firm when you plan your next degree or your loan payoff timeline.

You must be at least 17 years old to serve in most AmeriCorps positions, and many programs require a background check before you start. Applications run year-round through AmeriCorps.gov, where open positions are searchable by location, cause area, and term length.
