How the admission system works

Angola's public universities admit students through a national entrance exam known as the exame de acesso. The Regulamento Geral de Acesso ao Ensino Superior sets the framework, and each public university runs its own exam sitting under that framework.

Private universities operate outside this system. They set their own entry requirements and admission calendars, and most accept applications on a rolling basis rather than through a single national exam. Both public and private institutions need legal recognition from the Ministério do Ensino Superior, Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação (MESCTI) before they enroll students.

What you need to apply

At Universidade Agostinho Neto (UAN) , the largest public university, applicants submit:

• Your secondary school completion certificate (12th grade)

• A valid ID card or passport

• Proof of military registration status

• A work declaration if you already hold a job

• Payment of the exam registration fee

Requirements at other public universities follow the same pattern, though document lists and fees vary slightly by institution. Confirm the exact list with the university you apply to before the registration window closes.

The entrance exam

The exam checks knowledge in Portuguese, Mathematics, and subjects linked to your intended course. A candidate applying for medicine or a health science course sits papers weighted toward Biology and Chemistry, while an engineering applicant sits papers weighted toward Mathematics and Physics.

Angola's admission regulation sets a national minimum passing score of 10 out of 20 on the exame de acesso (Article 17, Decree 5/19), but that is only a floor. Universities can set a higher minimum per course each year, and in competitive courses like medicine or law the score you actually need to secure a place is well above 10, decided by ranking against available seats.

Where you can sit the exam

Angola split its original single public university into separate institutions across the provinces, so you do not need to travel to Luanda to access public higher education. Provincial public universities include Universidade Katyavala Bwila in Benguela, Universidade Mandume Ya Ndemufayo in Lubango, Universidade José Eduardo dos Santos in Huambo, Universidade 11 de Novembro in Cabinda, and Universidade Kimpa Vita in Uíge, alongside UAN in Luanda.

Each of these runs its own exame de acesso for the courses it offers. Check the specific university's admission page for the course list available in your province.

Timeline

Public universities publish their exam calendar, subject topics, and registration windows each academic year through official announcements. Registration typically opens months before the exam date, either online or in person at designated centers. Watch your target university's website and MESCTI's announcements closely, since windows for popular courses close fast.

After you pass

Once results are published, ranked candidates confirm their place by completing matricula, the formal enrollment step, within a set deadline. This involves paying a confirmation fee and submitting your original documents. Missing the matricula deadline costs you the place, even after passing the exam, so track the confirmation window as closely as the exam date itself.

If you miss a spot

Falling short of a place at your first-choice public university does not close off higher education. You have three main paths:

• Apply to a private university, most of which run more flexible admission and accept applications outside the national exam calendar.

• Apply to a different course or a less competitive public university in another province.

• Sit the exame de acesso again in the next cycle, using the gap to strengthen weak subjects.

Public universities offer far lower tuition, so prepare thoroughly and apply to more than one course or institution to raise your chances of a spot.
