Non-JUPAS is the door for Canadian applicants

JUPAS is Hong Kong's centralized admission system built around the local Diploma of Secondary Education exam. If you finished high school in Canada, JUPAS does not apply to you. HKU, CUHK and HKUST each run a separate track for applicants holding an international qualification, commonly called non-JUPAS or the International Qualifications route. An Ontario, BC, Alberta or other provincial diploma qualifies here alongside the IB and other international credentials.

All three universities evaluate you on the same basic package: your high school transcript, predicted and then final grades, a personal statement, and a reference from your school. None of them run a fixed points system the way UK universities use UCAS tariffs. Each reviews your file as a whole.

HKU's non-JUPAS process

HKU calls its track the International Admissions Scheme, for "non-local students with an international qualification or other national examination qualifications other than Mainland China's National Joint College Entrance Examination," according to HKU's admissions office . For the 2026 intake the application opened September 24, 2025. A first round closed November 26, 2025 at noon Hong Kong time, with your school counsellor submitting predicted or actual grades and supporting documents by December 3, 2025. First-round results came out December 8, 2025. Applicants who miss the first round have until August 21, 2026 to submit.

You apply directly online and enter your academic results yourself, then upload verification documents, a personal statement and references. HKU states plainly that clearing the minimum requirement is not enough on its own: interviews, personal statements and overall academic strength all factor into the decision.

CUHK and HKUST run comparable tracks

CUHK and HKUST both accept Canadian high school qualifications through their own international admissions pathways, separate from JUPAS, mirroring HKU's structure. Each university sets its own deadline for a given intake year and reviews applications through its own portal, so confirm the current deadline directly on each site rather than assuming it matches HKU's calendar. HKUST's admissions office lists "Canadian-patterned" credentials, including Canadian Grade 12, among the qualifications it accepts under its International Qualifications route.

Apply to more than one of the three if you are unsure where you will land. Each application runs independently, with its own document upload and its own fee, and none of the three shares your file with the others.

Some programs add an interview

Competitive programs, medicine, law and select business programs among them, often add an interview stage on top of the standard application at all three universities. Interview format, whether it runs in person, by phone or by video call, depends on the specific program and that year's applicant pool, so check your target program's own admissions page for what to expect rather than assuming every course works the same way.

What to prepare before you start

• A full high school transcript through the end of grade 11, plus current grade 12 marks once available.

• A personal statement addressing your intended program specifically, most reviewers want a program-focused case rather than a generic essay.

• A counsellor or teacher reference, arranged early since your school needs lead time to submit it through the university's own portal, not by email.

• Proof of English proficiency if your high school instruction was not in English, though a Canadian OSSD or provincial diploma taught in English generally covers this on its own.

After an offer arrives

Most offers at this stage are conditional on your final grade 12 marks. Send your final transcript as soon as it is available, generally by early July, so the university can confirm your place before the term starts. Expect a deposit requirement to hold your spot once the offer turns unconditional, sized against what each university actually charges in annual tuition. Once you accept, the next step is the Hong Kong student visa, a separate process you start only after you hold a confirmed offer letter.

Start the application the fall before you want to enroll. HKU's calendar above shows results reaching first-round applicants within roughly two weeks of the deadline, so a late application compresses your decision window against any Canadian university offers you are weighing at the same time.

Hong Kong's admissions calendar often produces a decision before Canadian universities need your final commitment. Use that timing to your advantage. Confirm your Hong Kong offer and any conditions attached to it well before your Canadian response deadline, so you choose between two firm offers rather than guessing at one of them.
