Nepal sent 24,890 students to US colleges and universities in the 2024-25 academic year, up from 16,742 the year before, a jump of about 48.7 percent. Undergraduate enrollment grew fastest, up 69.4 percent in one year, and associate degree programs at community colleges now enroll 17.2 percent of Nepali students in the US, a far higher share than most other sending countries.

How the Nepali academic calendar lines up with US deadlines
Nepal's school year runs on the Nepali calendar, starting around mid-April (Baisakh) and ending in March. The Secondary Education Examination (SEE) after grade 10 usually happens in April or May, with results out by June or July. Grade 11 and 12, commonly called +2, then run two years, and most +2 and bachelor's programs at Nepali universities admit new students between August and October (Bhadra to Ashwin).
The US academic year mostly starts in August or September, with Early Decision or Early Action deadlines in October or November and Regular Decision in December or January. This means a Nepali student in the final year of +2 applies to US schools with in-progress marks, then sends a final transcript once results post. Bachelor's degree holders applying for a US master's degree follow the same pattern around their final semester.

Undergraduate versus graduate applications
Undergraduate applicants mostly use the Common App or the Coalition App, platforms that send one core application and essay to many schools alongside school-specific supplements. Graduate applicants apply directly through each university's own portal, with a statement of purpose written for that department, a resume, and sometimes a writing sample or research proposal.
Graduate admissions committees read your statement of purpose against the specific faculty and research areas in that department. A generic essay reused across schools weakens a graduate application more than it weakens an undergraduate one, so tailor each one to the department.
The associate degree path many Nepali students use
Applying directly to a four-year university is not the only route. A large share of Nepali students in the US, 17.2 percent as of 2024-25, start at a community college, complete an associate degree over two years, then transfer to a four-year university for the final two years, per the same Open Doors data. Community colleges charge lower tuition than four-year schools, often accept students without SAT or ACT scores, and give you time to raise your English and academic record before you transfer.
Check each community college's international student office page for its own transcript and English test rules, and confirm which four-year universities it has a transfer agreement with before you commit.
What the process costs before tuition
Track application-stage costs separately from tuition, since they hit your budget earlier and in foreign currency.

The three government fees total $785, on top of application, test, and evaluation costs (Study in the States , travel.state.gov ). The $250 visa integrity fee comes from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and took effect on October 1, 2025. You pay it when your visa is issued rather than before your interview, and no waiver is available, so treat it as fixed in your budget as of August 2026 (BU ISSO ). Your school issues Form I-20 once you accept an offer and show proof of funding. You need this document before you pay the SEVIS fee or apply for your visa. A DHS rule taking effect September 15, 2026, replaces open-ended duration of status with a fixed admission period tied to your program length on the I-20, plus 30 days to arrive and 30 days to depart after your program ends (Study in the States ).
