Arkansas funds college mainly through the Academic Challenge Scholarship, worth up to 5,000 dollars a semester by senior year, and the ArFuture Grant, which covers remaining tuition for high-demand associate degrees and certificates after other aid. Both apply on top of the FAFSA through the state's SAMS portal.

Start With the FAFSA
Every state and federal aid program in Arkansas starts with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. File it as soon as it opens for the year you plan to enroll, since Academic Challenge Plus funding and several other awards use your FAFSA Student Aid Index to set your amount.
Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship
The Academic Challenge Scholarship is Arkansas's main merit award, funded through the state lottery. Students with a Student Aid Index under 8,000 qualify for extra Academic Challenge Plus funding on top of the base award below.
| Year | 4-Year Institution | 2-Year Institution |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | $2,000/semester | $2,000/semester |
| Year 2 | $4,000/semester | $3,000/semester |
| Year 3 | $4,000/semester | N/A |
| Year 4 | $5,000/semester | N/A |
To qualify out of high school you need a Diploma of Merit, a GPA of 3.00 or higher with any test score on record, or a GPA under 3.00 paired with an ACT score of 19 or higher, an SAT score of 990 or higher, or an equivalent Accuplacer score. The application opens October 1 and closes July 1 for the following academic year. To renew, full-time traditional students earn 27 credit hours in year one and 30 or more each year after, stay enrolled full-time, and hold a 2.5 cumulative GPA by the end of spring semester.
ArFuture Grant
The Arkansas Future Grant (ArFuture) works as a last-dollar program for high-demand fields. It pays the gap between your tuition and fees and whatever federal, state, and private aid you already receive, effectively making an eligible associate degree or certificate free. You need to pursue a STEM or other high-demand program at a public Arkansas institution, and either graduate from an Arkansas high school or GED program or have lived in the state for the last 3 years. ArFuture Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis with two deadlines: July 1 for fall-term enrollment and January 10 for spring-term enrollment. Check the SAMS portal (sams.adhe.edu) for the current cycle's exact dates.
ArFuture comes with obligations. Recipients complete a mentorship component and at least 10 hours of community service each semester, and after graduation you work full-time in Arkansas for 3 consecutive years. Miss these terms and the grant converts into a loan you repay with interest to the state.
Military and Family-Based Aid
The Military Dependents Scholarship Program waives tuition for eligible spouses and dependent children of qualifying service members and veterans pursuing a bachelor's degree or certificate at a public Arkansas school. A separate waiver under Arkansas Code § 6-82-601 covers dependents of disabled veterans, prisoners of war, and service members killed or missing in action.
Other State and Institutional Aid
Beyond Academic Challenge and ArFuture, most Arkansas public universities run their own institutional scholarships layered on top of state and federal aid, ranging from automatic GPA and test-score awards to department-specific scholarships. Check your target school's financial aid office and the SAMS portal , which lists every state-administered scholarship in one place with deadlines and eligibility.
