What the ASEAN University Network and AUN-QA Accreditation Mean for Applicants

TL;DR

The ASEAN University Network (AUN) is a group of about 30 leading universities across Southeast Asia, working alongside 184 associate members. Its AUN-QA label means a program or institution passed an independent quality check, not that it outranks other schools.

  • 🎓 AUN started in November 1995 with a mandate from the ASEAN Secretariat.

  • AUN-QA checks quality at two separate levels: individual programs and whole institutions.

  • A programme-level pass means assessors reviewed curriculum, staff, facilities and graduate outcomes.

  • AUN-QA is not a ranking system and does not compare universities against each other.

  • Check the specific program's AUN-QA status directly, instead of relying on the university's name alone.

What the ASEAN University Network and AUN-QA Accreditation Mean for Applicants

What the ASEAN University Network Is

The ASEAN University Network (AUN) started in November 1995 as a group of leading universities from across ASEAN's member countries, working under a mandate from the ASEAN Secretariat. The network now counts around 30 core member universities plus 184 associate member institutions, according to the AUN Secretariat . Core membership is not open application. Universities get invited and endorsed through a selection process, so the label signals an established research and teaching record recognized by peer institutions across the region.

AUN runs programs beyond quality checks, including academic mobility schemes, joint research networks, and student exchange support such as the ASEAN Credit Transfer System. For applicants comparing universities, the two AUN activities that matter most are the member list itself and its quality assurance arm, AUN-QA.

What AUN-QA Accreditation Checks

AUN-QA is the quality assurance division inside AUN. It runs assessments at two separate levels, and applicants often confuse the two.

  • Programme-level assessment reviews one specific degree program: curriculum design, teaching staff qualifications, student support services, facilities, and graduate outcomes.

  • Institutional-level assessment reviews the university's overall management system: governance, internal quality assurance processes, and how consistently the institution runs across all its programs.

A university passing an institutional-level AUN-QA review does not mean every program inside it passed a separate programme-level check, and the reverse holds too. Assessors carry out on-site visits as part of the process. Site visits paused during the pandemic and returned in 2022 and 2023, based on AUN Secretariat records. AUN-QA also trains its own assessors through Tier 1 and Tier 2 certification workshops, so the people conducting an assessment went through a standardized qualification process themselves before they evaluate anyone else.

How to Read an AUN-QA Label When Comparing Universities

Treat an AUN-QA pass as a floor, not a ranking. It tells you a program or institution met a documented quality standard, checked by outside assessors using the same framework across every participating ASEAN country. It does not tell you how that program compares to another AUN-QA-certified program at a different school, and it is not equivalent to subject-specific international accreditation bodies such as ABET for engineering or AACSB for business.

  • Check the specific program's AUN-QA status directly. A university's overall AUN membership does not mean your exact program passed an assessment.

  • Note whether the assessment was programme-level or institutional-level, since the two measure different things.

  • Ask the admissions office for the assessment date. AUN-QA certifications carry a defined validity period and get reassessed on a cycle, so an old pass does not confirm current quality.

  • Pair AUN-QA status with your home country's own recognition rules for the degree, especially for regulated fields like medicine, engineering, or law.

What AUN-QA Does Not Guarantee

An AUN-QA pass does not guarantee automatic degree recognition in another country, a specific job outcome, or automatic credit transfer to other schools. Recognition of your qualification for professional licensing still runs through your home country's education ministry or licensing board, a separate process from AUN-QA entirely. Use AUN-QA as one input in your research, alongside program-specific graduate outcomes, faculty credentials, and your target country's formal recognition requirements for the career you want.

Why Universities Pursue AUN-QA in the First Place

Universities apply for AUN-QA assessment voluntarily, and the process costs the institution both money and staff time to prepare documentation, host site visits, and address findings. A university that goes through this process signals it wants its programs held to a documented external standard, beyond its own internal review. For a private university competing for the same applicant pool as public flagship universities, an AUN-QA pass is often a concrete way to demonstrate its degree meets a regional benchmark beyond its own accreditation from its home country's ministry of education.

That said, AUN-QA assessment does not replace your home country's own national accreditation, which usually remains mandatory for a degree to be legally recognized inside that country. Treat AUN-QA as an additional, regional layer of quality assurance, sitting alongside your national system rather than instead of it.

How Often Assessments Get Renewed

AUN-QA assessments are not permanent badges. Programs and institutions go through reassessment on a defined cycle set by AUN-QA, and a certificate issued several years ago may no longer reflect a program's current state if the university has not gone through renewal. When you see an AUN-QA logo on a university's website, ask when the assessment happened and when the next one is due, the same way you would check an expiry date on any other certification.

Where to Verify AUN-QA Status

Do not rely on a university's own marketing page for AUN-QA claims. Check the AUN Secretariat website directly for its list of assessed programs and institutions, along with assessment dates. If a program is not listed there, ask the university for the certificate and the year it was issued before you count it as a factor in your decision.
