Bangladesh's Foreign Exchange Rules for Sending Money to Pay US Tuition

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Sep 23, 2026 • Updated Sep 23, 2026

TL;DR

Bangladeshi students send tuition and living costs to the US through a bank "student file," not the normal travel foreign exchange quota. As of August 2026, living expenses are capped near USD 2,000 a month, more for high-cost cities with proof, tuition itself has no fixed cap if the university documents it, and new students get a one-time USD 1,000 allowance for departure costs.

  • 🏦 Open a student file at an authorized dealer bank branch before your first transfer

  • 📄 You need your I-20, admission letter, passport, and NID or birth certificate

  • 💵 Tuition transfers follow your university's demand note, no fixed dollar cap if documented

  • 🏠 Living expense transfers are capped, higher caps need proof of cost of living

  • ✈️ New students get a separate one-time allowance for pre-departure costs

Bangladesh's Foreign Exchange Rules for Sending Money to Pay US Tuition

The student file is your main channel

Bangladesh Bank routes education remittances through a "student file" opened at an authorized dealer bank branch, separate from the general travel foreign exchange quota. You open the file once, then use it for tuition and living-cost transfers for as long as you stay enrolled, renewing it each year with proof you are still studying.

Documents to open a student file

Banks including Standard Chartered and IFIC Bank ask for broadly the same set of documents to open a student file for US study:

  • Your admission letter or Form I-20 from the US institution

  • The institution's fee structure or refund policy

  • Your academic certificates and transcripts

  • Sponsor or account holder details, since a parent or guardian usually holds the file

  • National ID or birth certificate, plus a valid passport

  • Your US visa copy, once you have it

  • Passport-size photographs

Bring the same documents used for your F-1 visa financial evidence, since the bank and the US consulate check related things: that a real institution admitted you and that funds exist to pay for it.

Sending limits for tuition and living costs

According to Bangladesh Bank rules described by LegalSeba , tuition transfers match the exact amount on your university's demand note or cost estimate, with no separate dollar ceiling as long as the cost is documented by the school. Living expenses are capped at USD 2,000 a month, though this rises by up to 50% for students in high-cost locations with proof of local living costs from the institution or another official source. Newly admitted students also get a one-time remittance of up to USD 1,000 before departure to cover initial setup costs.

These figures sit under FE Circular No. 37, reported valid through September 2026 at the time of writing, so confirm current limits with your bank before relying on them, Bangladesh Bank updates these rules periodically. Tuition transfers scale with the demand note rather than one flat number for every student, so a costlier private university and a lower-cost public one draw genuinely different transfer amounts through the same system.

International cards linked to your student file

In 2025, Bangladesh Bank allowed authorized dealer banks to issue debit, prepaid, or credit cards linked to a student file, in the name of the student or the sponsor financing the education, for use directly against tuition and other approved education expenses abroad, according to The Business Standard and The Daily Star . This card option reduces how often you need a fresh bank draft or wire transfer for routine payments such as course fees, housing deposits, or campus services, since you swipe the card instead of filing a new remittance request each time. Ask your bank whether it offers this card option on your specific student file, and confirm which merchants and payment types it accepts before relying on it for a tuition deadline.

Separate from your travel quota

Bangladesh Bank treats education remittances as a distinct entitlement from the standard travel foreign exchange quota available for personal trips abroad. Using your student file for tuition and living costs does not reduce your family's access to the travel quota for a separate, non-study trip, and the reverse holds too.

Where the money goes

Transfers from a student file go either directly to the US institution for tuition, or to your own foreign bank account for living expenses. Banks do not send education-file funds to a relative or third party abroad. If you already have a US bank account, ask your Bangladeshi bank whether it wires directly to it once you are enrolled.

Before you send your first payment

  • Confirm with your bank's forex desk which documents it needs for a US institution specifically.

  • Ask whether your bank issues an international card linked to the student file for smaller, ongoing payments instead of a wire for every transaction.

  • Check the current living-expense cap and one-time allowance directly with the bank, these change.

  • Keep copies of every demand note and transfer receipt, your bank and the university sometimes ask for them later.
