TL;DR

The Ministry of Religious Affairs runs its own scholarship track separate from LPDP, built for santri and PTKIN students, with PBSB covering full undergraduate costs and separate tracks funding overseas study in Islamic studies fields.

  • 🎓 PBSB (Program Beasiswa Santri Berprestasi): full S1 scholarship for pesantren graduates

  • 💵 Covers registration, tuition, books, thesis research, transport and health insurance, plus a monthly stipend

  • 📩 Apply through the shared LPDP-Kemenag registration platform, not Kemenag alone

  • 🌍 Separate Kemenag tracks send PTKIN staff and advanced students to Al-Azhar, Cairo University and other Middle East campuses

Beasiswa Kemenag for Islamic Studies and PTKIN Students

A scholarship route built around pesantren education

Most Indonesian scholarship guides point straight to LPDP, but the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) runs its own funding line for students coming out of pesantren and PTKIN (Islamic state university) education. The flagship program is PBSB, Program Beasiswa Santri Berprestasi, which has run since 2005 and is funded from the Dana Abadi Pesantren (Pesantren Endowment Fund). It targets graduates of pesantren-integrated schools who want to study Islamic studies and related fields at PTKIN campuses, according to the Kemenag scholarship portal .

What PBSB covers

PBSB is a full scholarship, not a partial grant. For students admitted through the program, it pays:

  • Registration and admission fees

  • SPP/UKT tuition for the full program length

  • A book allowance

  • Thesis research costs

  • Transport to and from campus

  • Health insurance

  • A monthly living stipend

These components come directly from the program's own description on the official PBSB page . The goal, as stated by Kemenag, is to widen access for pesantren graduates to deepen a specific field of knowledge rather than default to general studies.

Who can apply

PBSB targets graduates of madrasah or pesantren-based senior secondary education, not open to all Indonesian secondary graduates. Applicants apply individually and online, and selection includes academic screening plus Islamic studies aptitude specific to the pesantren curriculum. Applications for the 2026 intake used an extended deadline of 5 June 2026, so watch the official page for that year's exact window rather than assuming dates repeat.

Where you apply

PBSB registration runs through the shared platform at beasiswalpdp-terintegrasi.kemenkeu.go.id , the same integrated portal LPDP uses for several of its own tracks. This surprises some applicants who expect a Kemenag-only system. Create your account there, select the PBSB scheme under Kemenag-funded programs, and upload documents through that portal rather than a separate Kemenag site. For questions, Kemenag lists info@beasiswa.kemenag.go.id as the contact for PBSB specifically.

Overseas tracks for PTKIN staff and advanced students

Kemenag also runs scholarship lines that send PTKIN lecturers, education staff and advanced students abroad for Islamic studies, separate from the undergraduate-focused PBSB. One long-running example is the program known as 5000 Doktor or Integrated Master-Doctor (IMD), which funds a non-stop master's-to-doctorate pathway, typically around 4.5 years combined, at destinations including Al-Azhar University, Cairo University, Suez Canal University and other Arab League-affiliated universities in Egypt, according to Kemenag's official announcement . This track targets PTKIN academic staff more than fresh undergraduates, and awardees commit to returning to serve at a PTKIN campus after finishing.

Kemenag periodically opens shorter exchange options too, including one-semester overseas study placements for PTKIN students, announced through regional Kemenag offices rather than a single national page. Because these shorter placements open on an irregular schedule, check your PTKIN campus's international office and the relevant provincial Kemenag site directly instead of waiting for a fixed annual date.

Fitting Kemenag scholarships into your plan

If you are a pesantren graduate aiming for a PTKIN degree, PBSB is worth applying to before assuming you need LPDP, since PBSB's eligibility criteria are narrower but its funding is just as complete for the undergraduate level. If you are already on a PTKIN academic staff track and want a Middle East doctorate, the 5000 Doktor line is the closer match, understanding that it commits you to service at a PTKIN afterward. Neither program competes directly with LPDP, so pesantren and PTKIN students can still apply to LPDP separately for postgraduate study once they are eligible.
