Three main housing routes
Students in Bosnia and Herzegovina choose between a university dormitory, a private room in a shared flat, or a full private apartment. Dormitories cost the least but have limited beds and are not available at every university. Sharing a private flat with two or three other students is the most common route in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, since it splits rent while giving you more independence than a dorm.
University dormitories
Private universities publish clear dormitory pricing you can plan around before you arrive. At the International University of Sarajevo , the Plavi Leptir residence for male students charges annual fees from 1,850 EUR for a four or five-person room up to 3,000 EUR for a VIP double, with breakfast, hot water, wired internet and cleaning of common areas included, plus a refundable 100 EUR deposit. The Mehmet Cakir residence houses female students across double, triple, quadruple and five-person rooms.
Public universities also run their own dormitories, generally cheaper than private housing, but with limited beds and admission often prioritized by academic ranking or financial need. Contact your faculty's student affairs office directly for current availability and prices, since public dorm rates are not centrally published the way a private university's are.
Private rental costs by city
Sarajevo and Banja Luka carry the most student housing supply of any Bosnian cities. A full one-bedroom apartment is more than most students need or can afford alone, so most students share.

Budget beyond rent
Rent is rarely your only housing cost. Factor in a security deposit up front, commonly one month's rent, internet if not already included, and higher heating bills between November and March, since Sarajevo and Banja Luka both sit in valleys with cold winters. Broadband internet in Sarajevo runs around 26 EUR a month if you arrange your own connection, according to Numbeo (August 2026).
What to check in a rental contract

Photograph the flat's condition and any existing damage before you move in

Start with your university's international or student affairs office, since many keep informal lists of landlords used to renting to students, alongside any dormitory options. If you search independently, cross check a listed price against the city averages above, since first offers to foreign students sometimes run higher than the local market rate.
