BSW vs MSW: Which Degree You Need to Register as a Social Worker in Canada

A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from an accredited program is enough to register as a social worker in every Canadian province. A Master of Social Work (MSW) is not required for that base registration, it matters for specific clinical, advanced and leadership roles.
🎓 BSW = your entry ticket to register as a social worker with your provincial college
MSW = required or preferred for many clinical, hospital and private-practice roles
Ontario runs two categories: Registered Social Worker (RSW) and Registered Social Service Worker (RSSW)
📩 You register with a provincial regulatory college, never with CASW directly
Diploma-level social service work graduates register under a separate, lower title than BSW holders
Registration runs through your province, not one national body
The Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) is the national professional association for the field, but it does not license anyone. Every province and territory runs its own regulatory college that decides who registers as a social worker there, so your actual requirements depend on where you plan to practice (CASW ).
In Ontario, the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) runs two separate registration categories: Registered Social Worker (RSW) and Registered Social Service Worker (RSSW). Both a BSW and an MSW lead to the RSW category, while a two- or three-year social service work diploma leads to the RSSW category instead (OCSWSSW ).
BSW vs MSW at a glance
| Credential | Typical length | Registers you as | Common roles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social service work diploma | 2-3 years at college | RSSW in Ontario, a similar lower category elsewhere | Support and case management under supervision |
| BSW | 4 years, accredited program | RSW (or your province's equivalent full title) | Community, school, child welfare, front-line health |
| MSW | 1-2 years past a BSW, longer for direct-entry students | Still RSW, the same base category as a BSW | Clinical, hospital, private practice, supervisory, policy |
What your BSW needs to include
To register anywhere in Canada, your bachelor's degree needs accreditation for social work education, not a general social sciences label. Confirm accreditation status through the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE-ACFTS), the body that accredits BSW and MSW programs across the country, before you commit to a program, particularly a new one you have not heard of locally.
Accredited BSW programs build in a supervised field practicum. Once you hold an accredited BSW, apply directly to your provincial college for registration. Graduate school is not a prerequisite, and most working social workers in community, school, child welfare and front-line health settings practice for years on a BSW alone.
Where an MSW starts to matter
An MSW does not unlock a separate, higher registration category on its own in most provinces, it expands what employers consider you for. Hospitals, specialized mental health teams, private clinical practices and employee assistance program (EAP) providers frequently list a master's as a requirement or a strong preference over a BSW, because the extra one to two years usually concentrate on clinical assessment, therapy modalities and advanced practice methods that a general BSW curriculum does not cover in the same depth.
An MSW opens doors a BSW does not: doctoral admission if you want to teach or research, supervisory and policy roles inside large agencies, and private-practice work where clients expect a clinical-level credential. If your goal is a caseload in a hospital psychiatric unit or a private therapy practice, plan for an MSW from the start rather than treating it as an optional upgrade later.
Choosing your path
Choose a BSW-only path if you want to start working and registering as soon as possible, and you are open to front-line, community or generalist practice. Choose an MSW, either straight through or after working a few years on your BSW, if you already know you want clinical, hospital or private-practice work, since many of those employers screen out BSW-only applicants at the resume stage even though the province registers either degree under the same title.
Confirm the specific registration category and any extra clinical-hours or supervision requirements directly with the regulatory college in the province where you intend to work. Categories, titles and add-on clinical designations vary by province even though the BSW-first, MSW-for-specialization pattern holds nationally.
