Why You Do Not Apply Directly to Cairo University

Egypt places nearly all Thanaweya Amma (General Secondary Certificate) graduates into public university faculties through one national system: the Coordination Office, known as Tansiq, run by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Cairo University does not review individual applications from Thanaweya Amma students. It receives students the Tansiq system assigns to it, based on their percentage score and the choices they submitted.

This differs sharply from how many other countries admit students. You do not write a personal statement or sit an interview for a standard Cairo University undergraduate seat. Your Thanaweya Amma percentage and your ranked list of faculty preferences do the work.

How the Tansiq System Works

After Thanaweya Amma results are released, register your faculty preferences on the official Tansiq portal . List every faculty you would accept, in order, across all public universities, not only Cairo University. The system matches applicants to faculties starting from the highest percentage down, filling each faculty's seats until they run out.

Your Thanaweya Amma track decides which faculties appear as options. The Science track splits further into Mathematics and Science sections: Math-section students compete for Engineering and similar faculties, while Science-section students compete for Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and related programmes. Literary track students compete for Law, Arts, Commerce, and other humanities and social science faculties. Faculties on one track's list are not open to the other track's students.

Each faculty's minimum accepted percentage shifts every year, since it depends on how many students apply and how many seats exist. A Cairo University faculty with a high minimum percentage one year may sit lower or higher the next depending on how the applicant pool performs. Check the official Tansiq results announcement for the current cycle rather than relying on a past year's threshold, since phase results are published separately each round .

Tansiq Phases and Waiting Lists

Tansiq runs in more than one phase. Students not placed in the first phase, or who want to reconsider their choices after seeing where the cutoff landed, get additional phases to submit or adjust preferences. Each phase narrows the pool of open seats, so later phases carry a smaller range of available faculties.

Registering With Cairo University After Placement

Once Tansiq assigns you to a Cairo University faculty, complete registration directly with that faculty's admission office: submit your Thanaweya Amma certificate, ID documents, photos, and any faculty-specific medical or fitness clearance where required. Cairo University sets its own registration deadline after each Tansiq phase, so confirm your seat promptly once you are placed.

Applicants Outside the Standard Thanaweya Amma Track

Holders of international certificates, American Diploma, IGCSE, IB, or Al-Azhar secondary certificates generally do not go through the standard tansik.egypt.gov.eg portal used for Thanaweya Amma. Egyptian public universities run separate equivalency and admission tracks for these certificates, with different document and score conversion requirements. If your certificate is not the standard Thanaweya Amma, confirm the correct application channel with Cairo University's admissions office directly rather than assuming the general Tansiq process applies to you.
