What C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency certify
C1 Advanced, also called CAE (Certificate in Advanced English), and C2 Proficiency, also called CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English), are two exams in the Cambridge English Qualifications series run by Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Both map onto the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). C1 Advanced certifies upper-advanced English. C2 Proficiency certifies the top CEFR band, expert-level English close to an educated native speaker.
Both exams test reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and both report a fixed pass grade rather than a single overall score like TOEFL or IELTS. A pass certificate does not expire, which differs from TOEFL and IELTS, where most US universities only accept scores from the last two years.
Why fewer US universities list them
US admissions systems built their English-proficiency requirements around TOEFL and IELTS, then added the Duolingo English Test and PTE Academic as remote-friendly options. Cambridge English Qualifications grew mainly out of UK and European school systems and UK visa pathways, so UK, European, and some Commonwealth universities list them more consistently than US schools do.
Some US universities accept C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at a minimum grade set on their own page. Many admissions pages simply do not mention Cambridge English at all, which does not always mean it is refused. It often means the office has not built a formal policy around it and reviews it case by case, or asks you to submit TOEFL or IELTS instead.
How to check whether your target school accepts it
Open the international admissions or English-proficiency page of each specific program, not the university homepage. Requirements differ between the undergraduate office and individual graduate departments.
Search the page for "Cambridge," "CAE," or "CPE." If nothing appears, email the international admissions office directly and ask in writing before you register for the exam.
Check Cambridge's own recognition information for institutions that publicly list its exams, then confirm on the university's own page, since directories are not always current.
If a program does not list Cambridge English, ask whether it accepts it as supporting evidence alongside another required test, rather than assuming it is unusable.
