How to Change Your Course or University in Uganda After Admission

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Africa Admissions & Exams

TL;DR

To change an admitted course in Uganda, apply through your university's Academic Registrar during the change-of-programme window, and you only qualify for courses where your weighted points meet that course's cut-off.

  • 📩 Applications go through the Academic Registrar's office, usually online, with a small processing fee

  • 🎓 You must meet the cut-off points of the course you are switching into

  • ⏱️ Change requests open only during a set window early in the academic year, not any time

  • Changing your programme without official approval can get you discontinued from the university

How to Change Your Course or University in Uganda After Admission

Changing your course is possible, but controlled

Getting admitted to a public university in Uganda does not lock you into that course forever. Universities allow freshers to apply for a change of programme, subject, or in some cases institution, but only through an official process run by the Office of the Academic Registrar, and only within a defined window after admission lists come out.

Step 1: Check whether you qualify

Before applying to switch, check the cut-off points for the course you want to move into. Universities only approve a change if your weighted points, calculated from your UACE results and subject combination, meet or exceed the cut-off for that specific course and sponsorship track (government or private) in the current intake. A change request for a course whose cut-off you do not meet gets rejected regardless of how badly you want to switch.

Step 2: Apply through the Academic Registrar

At Makerere University, for example, the Office of the Academic Registrar manages all change-of-programme and change-of-subject applications. The process runs online, and Makerere charges a processing fee of UGX 6,000 per application. Other public universities run a similar process through their own registrar's office, though fees and exact steps differ, so check your specific institution's registration page before applying.

Step 3: Wait for the decision and collect your letter

If your change request is approved, the registrar's office issues you an official letter confirming the new programme or subject. You then need to complete an acceptance form and submit copies to the relevant offices, typically the admissions and records office, both your former and new college or school, and the university's ICT or records office so your student records update correctly across the system.

Timing

Change-of-programme windows open early in each academic year, around the same period as fresher registration and orientation, and close after a set number of weeks. Universities announce exact dates through their registrar's office and student portals each year, so watch for the announcement rather than assuming last year's dates repeat exactly.

Why unauthorized changes are risky

Do not simply start attending classes for a different course or transfer to another institution without going through the formal approval process. Universities warn that switching your programme, subject, or school without proper authorization can lead to discontinuation, since your registration, exam entries, and academic records stay tied to your originally approved programme until an official change is processed.
