The National Service Scheme assigns you to a district, region and organization for your one year of service, and treats that posting as fixed unless you show a genuine reason to move. Reposting exists for hardship, not preference, so NSS reviews every request against documented grounds before approving anything.

Accepted reasons typically include a serious medical condition confirmed by a hospital, marriage that relocates your household, pregnancy, a documented security threat at your posting station, or a spouse already working or posted far from where NSS sent you. Wanting a bigger city, a different employer, or a shorter commute does not count as grounds on its own, and NSS routinely rejects requests built only on preference.

How to Submit a Reposting Request

Direct your application to the Regional NSS Office responsible for your current posting district, not the national secretariat in Accra. Write a formal, signed letter stating your reason clearly, attach every supporting document, and address it to the Regional Director for that office.

NSS grants one reposting per service year. A second request after an approved move faces rejection unless a new and serious circumstance arises, so treat your first application as your real opportunity to get the details right.

The official reposting process does not charge a fee. Personnel who pay agents or unofficial contacts to speed up or guarantee a posting change risk losing money with nothing to show for it, and NSS management has repeatedly warned service personnel against this.

Documents to Prepare Before You Apply

Consider an Internal Adjustment Before You Apply

Not every problem at your posting needs a full reposting. If the issue is the specific role, department or supervisor within an organization rather than the location itself, raise it first with your posting institution's NSS coordinator or human resource officer, since some organizations move personnel between departments internally without involving the Regional NSS Office at all.

Save the formal reposting route for cases where the organization or location itself, not just your role inside it, is the real problem.

What Happens After Submission

Your Regional NSS Office reviews the file and forwards it to headquarters, where an authorized officer, not regional staff, gives the final decision. Verifying your documents and confirming space at an alternative posting station both take time, so submit as soon as your reason for reposting becomes clear rather than waiting near the end of the service year.

Continue reporting to your current posting while NSS reviews your request. Leaving your station before you receive written approval counts as absconding, and that puts your national service certificate and any benefits tied to completing service at risk.

If NSS Rejects Your Request

Ask the Regional Office in writing for the reason behind the rejection, since a weak or incomplete document set is a common cause, and you may resubmit with stronger evidence. Where your grounds are genuinely serious, for example an escalating security threat, raise the matter again with additional documentation rather than abandoning your post.
