Choosing Between Common App, Coalition App, and University-Specific Portals
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 19, 2026
Use the Common App for most private universities, Coalition applications through Scoir for Coalition member schools, and a university's own portal for schools like the University of California or MIT that skip both networks.
📩 Check each university's admissions page for its accepted platform before you register.
🎓 The Common App covers more than 1,000 colleges and works for most international applicants.
💵 Each college decides on its own whether to grant a fee waiver to international applicants.
🏠 Enter your foreign high school manually if it is missing, and name a staff member as your counselor if your school has no formal counselor role.
Three Application Routes, One Decision Per School
US undergraduate applications run through one of three systems: the Common App, Coalition applications submitted via the Scoir platform, or a portal built and run by a single university or state system. You do not pick one system for your whole list. You use whatever each target school accepts.
Some universities accept more than one platform and treat every applicant the same regardless of route. Others use only one system, so the choice is not optional. Confirm the accepted platform on each school's own admissions page before you register for an account, since third-party guides go out of date fast.
Common App: The Default for Most International Applicants
The Common App works for more than 1,000 colleges and covers almost every selective private university in the US, according to Common App's guide for international students . You complete one core section covering personal details, family education background, activities, and your main essay, then add a separate supplement for each college on your list.
Your school does not need to already exist in the Common App system. Add it with its name, address, and grading scale, then name a staff member as your school official so they submit your transcript and recommendation letters through the platform.
International applicants request a fee waiver for financial hardship inside the application. Each college still decides on its own whether to grant it, according to Common App's international fee waiver policy . Some colleges accept the waiver automatically once you check the box, some ask your counselor to confirm hardship in writing, and some offer no waiver to applicants outside the US.
Coalition Applications Now Run Through Scoir
The old standalone Coalition Application (MyCoalition) is retired. Coalition for College member schools now take applications through Scoir, under the name Apply Coalition with Scoir, according to Coalition for College . Register for a free Scoir account, search the list of Coalition member colleges, and submit your application from there.
Fewer schools use this route than the Common App, and most Coalition members also accept the Common App in parallel. Before you set up a Scoir account, check whether your target college treats Coalition/Scoir as one option among several or as its only application path.
University-Specific Portals
Some public university systems and a handful of private universities run their own application instead of joining the Common App or Coalition network. MIT and the University of California system run their own portal for every applicant; UT Austin runs its own ApplyTexas portal but also accepts the Common App.
These portals ask their own questions, set their own essay prompts, and define documents like transcripts and recommendations on their own terms. Read the international applicant instructions on each portal separately rather than assuming a format that worked on the Common App transfers over.
Deadlines and required materials on university-specific portals do not sync with the Common App calendar. Track each system's deadlines on a separate calendar entry so an early UC or MIT deadline does not slip past while your attention stays on Common App schools.
Getting a Foreign School Recognized
All three systems let you add a high school that is missing from their database. Enter the school's name, address, and grading scale by hand, then attach your official transcript, with a certified English translation if your school issues records in another language.
Counselor recommendations are often the hardest part for applicants outside the US, since many school systems have no role equivalent to an American school counselor. Common App instructions let another staff member, such as a principal, form tutor, or academic coordinator, act as your counselor and submit the required forms.
Comparing the Three Platforms
| Platform | Coverage | Fee waiver for international applicants | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common App | 1,000+ colleges, most selective private universities | Available, granted at each college's discretion | Applicants targeting several private universities at once |
| Coalition via Scoir | Coalition member colleges, overlapping with Common App | Set by each member college | Applicants applying to schools that prefer or require Coalition/Scoir |
| University portal | One school or one state system only | Set by that school or system | State university systems and schools outside Common App and Coalition |
How to Decide
List every school on your target list next to the platform it accepts, taken directly from that school's admissions page rather than a search engine summary. Most applicants end up on the Common App for the bulk of their list, with a separate university portal handling one or two state schools.
Register for the platform you use most first, since your core information, essay, and activities list carry over to every college on that same platform. Leave extra time for any school running its own portal, since documents uploaded there do not transfer from the Common App or from Scoir.
Cross-check platform acceptance against a university's Common Data Set (CDS) filing if the admissions page reads unclear, since the CDS lists official application requirements and accepted platforms for that specific admissions cycle.
