Choosing Between Mitacs Globalink, DAAD RISE and Fulbright Canada for a Research Term

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 19, 2026 • Study Abroad, Canadians Studying Abroad

TL;DR

Mitacs Globalink Research Award sends senior undergraduates and graduate students abroad for 12-24 weeks with 6,000 CAD in funding and the widest destination list. DAAD RISE Germany is a summer STEM placement in Germany only, paying 992 EUR a month plus an extra Canada-specific top-up. Fulbright Canada is not a short research term at all, it funds a full 8-month year in the US after you finish your bachelor's degree.

  • 🎓 Mitacs GRA: 12-24 weeks, 6,000 CAD, open to senior undergrads at select destinations plus grad students, most countries.

  • 🎓 DAAD RISE: summer only, Germany only, STEM fields, 992 EUR a month plus up to 7,000 CAD for matched Canadian applicants.

  • 🎓 Fulbright Canada: 8 months, US$25,000, United States only, requires a completed bachelor's degree before the grant starts.

  • ⏱️ Deadlines fall roughly a year ahead of the term: DAAD RISE closes around late November for the following summer.

Choosing Between Mitacs Globalink, DAAD RISE and Fulbright Canada for a Research Term

Three programs built for different stages

Mitacs Globalink, DAAD RISE Germany and Fulbright Canada all fund research abroad, but they are not interchangeable options for the same trip. They differ in who applies, how long the placement runs, and how much choice you get over the host country. Match the program to your academic stage and destination goal before you build an application around it.

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) sends you from a Canadian university to a partner institution abroad for a supervised research project. Projects run 12 to 24 weeks for most applicants, with longer placements available to graduate students. Senior undergraduates apply at select destinations, while graduate students and postdoctoral fellows get the widest access. Funding runs to 6,000 CAD, and destinations cover most countries Mitacs holds a partner agreement with, aside from countries under a Government of Canada travel advisory of "avoid all travel" or "avoid non-essential travel". Apply through your home Canadian university's Mitacs contact, and line up a research supervisor and project at the host institution before you submit. See University of Toronto's Globalink Research Award page for a full breakdown of eligibility and funding.

DAAD RISE Germany: one destination, strongest Canada-specific funding

RISE Germany, run by the German Academic Exchange Service, places undergraduates in a Germany-based summer research placement in biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering or computer science. You need at least 2 completed years of your undergraduate degree and must remain an undergraduate after the placement ends. The base stipend runs 992 EUR a month . Canadian applicants get an added benefit: DAAD partners with Mitacs to offer a combined award of up to 7,000 CAD for up to 100 successfully matched Canadian candidates, covering travel and living costs on top of the base stipend. Applications for a given summer close around the end of November the year before, so plan a full academic year ahead.

Fulbright Canada Student Award: a full year, not a short term

Fulbright Canada's Student Award does not sit in the same category as the two above. It funds one 8-month academic year of independent research or study in the United States, worth US$25,000 , taken up at any US university, think tank or government agency, provided you arrange and document your own host affiliation. The eligibility gap matters most here: you need a completed bachelor's degree before the grant start date . A continuing undergraduate looking for a term abroad mid-degree does not qualify. This award suits a graduating senior or recent graduate planning a full year of research or graduate-level study in the US before, or instead of, starting a Canadian graduate program.

Which to apply for

Apply to Mitacs GRA for the widest destination choice, once you line up a supervisor at a partner institution mid-degree. Apply to DAAD RISE for a STEM placement in Germany specifically, once you have completed 2 years of your undergraduate degree. Apply to Fulbright Canada once your bachelor's degree is finished or about to finish, if a fully-funded year in the US fits your plans better than a summer term. Confirm current deadlines and eligibility on each program's own page before you build an application timeline, since funding amounts and match numbers change by year.

How you get matched to a project

The three programs match you to a host in different ways. Mitacs GRA runs bottom-up: you or your home supervisor identify a partner researcher abroad and line up the project before you apply. DAAD RISE runs top-down: German professors post open positions to a database, and you browse and apply to specific postings that fit your field. Fulbright Canada runs entirely on your own initiative: you contact a US host institution directly, secure a written affiliation, and document that relationship yourself in the application. Budget more lead time for Fulbright and Mitacs GRA than for DAAD RISE, since arranging your own host contact takes longer than applying to a posted position.

What none of the three funding amounts fully covers

Read each award as a contribution, not a full budget. None of the three routinely covers your Canadian passport renewal, personal spending money beyond basic living costs, or a second flight home mid-term if your plans change. Mitacs GRA and the DAAD RISE Canadian top-up bundle in specific line items like transportation and insurance, so check exactly what is included before you assume a cost is covered. Fulbright Canada's larger US$25,000 figure needs to stretch across a full 8 months of US living costs, plan a detailed monthly budget against that total rather than treating it as spending money on top of free housing.

All three also expect you to hold your own valid passport and, for Fulbright and DAAD RISE, to manage a US or German visa or entry process on top of the award itself. Build the visa timeline into your application planning rather than treating it as a step you handle after acceptance.
