Consequences of Defaulting on a HELB Loan

Defaulting on a HELB loan gets you listed with the Credit Reference Bureau, blocks you from a HELB clearance certificate, and lets penalties build on the unpaid balance.
📩 CRB listing blocks new bank loans, mortgages and some job offers
💵 Penalties accrue on top of the principal you still owe
🚫 No clearance certificate means no compliance proof for jobs or tenders that require one

What counts as default
You fall into default with the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) when you miss your scheduled repayments after your grace period ends, whether that is because you never set up payroll deductions, stopped manual payments, or simply lost track of your loan account.
Default is not a one-time event.
It is a status that stays active, and gets worse, for as long as your account remains unpaid.
Credit Reference Bureau listing
HELB reports defaulting borrowers to the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).
A negative CRB listing follows you outside your relationship with HELB.
It blocks or delays applications for bank loans, mortgages, credit cards and even mobile loan products, since most Kenyan lenders check your CRB status before approving new credit. Some employers, particularly in finance and government roles, also run CRB checks as part of hiring, so a HELB default costs you opportunities that have nothing to do with your loan directly.
Penalties on the outstanding balance
Once you default, penalties accrue on top of the principal and interest you already owe. The longer the account stays unpaid, the larger the total balance grows, which makes early action far cheaper than waiting. Check your exact penalty charges through your HELB self-service portal statement rather than estimating them, since the amount depends on how long your account has been in default and your original loan terms.
No clearance certificate
You cannot get a HELB clearance certificate while your loan is in default.
Many public sector employers, licensing bodies and some tender processes require this certificate, so an unresolved default blocks job offers or business opportunities well after you left campus.
HELB pursues guarantors too
The guarantors you listed when you applied are not a formality.
If HELB cannot recover the debt from you directly, it pursues your guarantors for repayment.
Defaulting therefore puts your guarantors' finances and CRB status at risk too, which is worth remembering before you agree to guarantee someone else's loan.
How to get out of default
Log in to the HELB self-service portal to see your exact outstanding balance and penalty charges.
Watch for HELB penalty waiver programmes. HELB periodically runs waiver initiatives that cut a large share of accumulated penalties for borrowers who clear their full arrears in a single payment through the portal, mobile app or USSD code *642#, rather than in installments.
If you cannot pay in full, contact HELB about a repayment plan or hardship consideration rather than staying silent, since an account you are actively managing is treated differently from one that has gone completely unpaid.
Once you clear your balance, apply for your clearance certificate and check that HELB has updated your CRB status, since clearing the debt does not always remove the listing automatically.
