Converting Savings to Meet Anglosphere Student Visa Financial Thresholds: A Guide for ASEAN Families

TL;DR

Australia asks for AUD 29,710 in savings to cover 12 months of student living costs. The UK asks for £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month outside London, held for 28 days. Canada raised its minimum to CAD 22,895 from September 2025. The US sets no fixed number, your I-20 shows the amount your school certifies.

  • 💵 Convert your VND, IDR or PHP savings against the destination threshold before you apply, not after.

  • Add a 10-15% buffer above the published minimum. Exchange rates move between your bank statement date and your visa lodgement date.

  • ⏱️ UK funds must sit in your account for 28 straight days, ending within 31 days of your application date.

  • Canada's threshold for a single applicant rose from CAD 20,635 (January 2024) to CAD 22,895 (September 2025).

  • Check a live currency converter right before you transfer money. A rate you saw last week is already old.

Why the conversion date matters

Visa officers check your bank balance in the destination currency, not in dong, rupiah or peso. Between the day you check the required amount and the day your bank issues a statement, the exchange rate moves. A gap that looks fine in April can fall short in June if your home currency weakens against the Australian dollar, British pound or Canadian dollar. Build your conversion plan around the published threshold, not around a rate you saw once.

Australia: convert to AUD 29,710

Australia's student visa subclass 500 finance page lists AUD 29,710 as the 12-month living cost for a single student applicant, plus extra amounts if family members travel with you.

WhoAmount (AUD)
Student, 12 months29,710
Partner who travels with you10,394
Child who travels with you4,449
School costs, per child per year13,502

Instead of savings, you can show parent or partner income of at least AUD 87,856 a year for a single applicant, or AUD 102,500 with family members included. The Genuine Student requirement, which replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant criterion, applies to any application lodged on or after 23 March 2024, according to the Department of Home Affairs . Convert your VND, IDR or PHP balance against AUD 29,710 with room to spare, since Home Affairs can ask for updated evidence during processing.

United Kingdom: convert to £1,529 a month

The UK sets maintenance funds at £1,529 a month if you study in London, or £1,171 a month outside London , capped at 9 months. That works out to £13,761 total for London or £10,539 outside London, on top of your first year of tuition. The money must sit in your account for a continuous 28-day period, and that 28-day window has to end within 31 days of the date you submit your visa application. Convert your peso, rupiah or dong into pounds early enough to let the 28-day clock run without a shortfall showing up mid-period.

Canada: convert to CAD 22,895

Canada's study permit financial support page set the proof of funds amount for a single applicant outside Quebec at CAD 22,895 from 1 September 2025, up from CAD 20,635 which applied from 1 January 2024. This figure excludes tuition and transportation, which you prove separately.

Family sizeAmount (CAD)
1 person22,895
2 people28,502
3 people35,040
4 people42,543
5 or morebase amount plus 6,170 per extra person

Quebec applicants follow a separate scale set by that province's immigration ministry, not the federal figure above.

United States: no fixed number, follow your I-20

The US does not publish one savings threshold for every applicant. Your school certifies a cost of attendance figure on your Form I-20, covering tuition, fees and living costs for one academic year, and you need to show funds that cover that specific figure plus a reasonable estimate for the years after. A consular officer decides case by case whether your evidence satisfies the ability-to-pay standard under US immigration law, so a bank letter that matches your I-20 figure exactly, in the right currency and dated close to your interview, carries more weight than a larger but older statement.

Handling exchange rate timing risk

  • Add 10-15% above the published minimum so a currency swing between your statement date and your visa appointment does not push you under the line.

  • Check a live currency converter right before you transfer, not the rate you noted days earlier. Rates for VND, IDR and PHP move daily against AUD, GBP, CAD and USD.

  • Ask your bank about a forward rate lock if you are converting a large sum months ahead of your application. This fixes your rate and removes the guesswork.

  • Avoid informal money changers for visa-purpose transfers. Use your bank or a licensed remittance provider so the transaction leaves a paper trail that matches your statement.

  • Keep the converted funds in the currency and account type each country asks for. Converting too early and holding cash outside a bank account does not satisfy the UK's 28-day rule or Canada's proof of funds check.
