Public University Tuition in Kentucky

Kentucky's eight public universities charge in-state undergraduate tuition from about $9,387 to $13,502 a year, and out-of-state tuition from about $13,658 to $34,140, according to the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard . The gap between in-state and out-of-state rates is largest at the two flagships.

UniversityIn-state tuitionOut-of-state tuition
Kentucky State University$9,387$13,658
Murray State University$9,900$19,836
Morehead State University$10,024$14,980
Eastern Kentucky University$10,320$21,230
Northern Kentucky University$11,088$21,912
Western Kentucky University$11,652$27,000
University of Louisville$13,136$29,482
University of Kentucky$13,502$34,140

These are sticker tuition rates before scholarships, grants, or fee waivers. Your actual bill drops if you qualify for KEES, the CAP Grant, or an institutional scholarship, so treat this table as a starting point, not your final cost. Run your own numbers through each university's net price calculator, published on its financial aid site, before you compare sticker prices across campuses, since the calculator factors in the aid you are likely to receive based on your GPA, test scores, and family income.

Kentucky State University$18,073
Murray State University$21,012
Morehead State University$21,018
Eastern Kentucky University$22,588
Northern Kentucky University$23,800
Western Kentucky University$24,234
University of Louisville$25,712

Community College: The Cheapest Public Option

KCTCS, Kentucky's community and technical college system, charges far less. Bluegrass Community and Technical College, one of the system's 16 colleges, lists in-state tuition around $4,808 a year and out-of-state tuition around $6,512, according to College Scorecard. Starting at a KCTCS college and transferring into a four-year university cuts your total tuition bill for a bachelor's degree substantially, since your general education credits usually transfer under statewide articulation agreements.

Room and Board

On-campus room and board adds a large second cost on top of tuition. Across Kentucky's public universities, published on-campus room and board runs from about $8,686 at Kentucky State University to $16,016 at the University of Kentucky.

UniversityOn-campus room and board
Kentucky State University$8,686
Morehead State University$10,994
Murray State University$11,112
Eastern Kentucky University$12,268
University of Louisville$12,576
Western Kentucky University$12,582
Northern Kentucky University$12,712
University of Kentucky$16,016

Living off campus can cost less or more than a dorm and meal plan, depending on the city. Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky's two largest cities, carry higher rent than smaller college towns like Morehead, Murray, or Richmond, so factor local rent into your decision if you plan to move off campus after your first year.

Private College Tuition

Private Kentucky colleges set their own tuition, and rates run well above the public in-state price. Centre College, a private liberal arts college in Danville, charges about $52,820 a year in tuition plus about $14,640 for room and board, according to College Scorecard. Private colleges typically offer larger institutional scholarships than public schools, so the sticker price rarely matches what you actually pay. Get a full financial aid offer before ruling out a private school on price alone.

Building a Realistic Total Budget

Add your tuition, room and board, and a buffer for books, transportation, and personal expenses to get a full-year estimate. A Kentucky resident attending the University of Kentucky on campus faces roughly $13,502 in tuition plus $16,016 in room and board, near $30,000 before books and fees. The same student at Kentucky State University or Morehead State faces a total closer to $20,000. An out-of-state student at Western Kentucky University faces about $27,000 in tuition plus $12,582 in room and board, near $40,000 before books and fees, nearly double the in-state total on the same campus. Community college for your first two years, followed by a transfer to a four-year school, cuts your total cost the most.

Books, Transportation and Personal Expenses

Tuition and room and board are not your full bill. Set aside money for textbooks, a laptop, transportation, and personal expenses on top of the figures above. These costs vary more by major and lifestyle than by campus, so pull your own line-item estimate from your school's official cost of attendance worksheet in your financial aid portal rather than relying on a single statewide number.

Ways to Cut the Cost

  • Start at a KCTCS college and transfer to cut two years of tuition to community college rates

  • File the FAFSA early and apply for KEES and the CAP Grant on top of federal aid

  • Check Work Ready Kentucky for tuition-free short certificate programs in high-demand fields

  • Compare off-campus rent against your school's room and board rate before committing to a dorm past your first year

  • Ask for a full financial aid offer from private colleges instead of ruling them out on sticker price
