Part of the guide Cost of Attending College by State: Tuition and Living Costs Compared

TL;DR

A Nevada resident at UNR pays about $11,079 a year in tuition and fees for 2026-2027, and total cost of attendance runs from about $21,000 living with family to about $32,600 living off campus once housing, food and books are added.

  • 💵 UNLV resident tuition and fees run about $11,231 a year. Nonresidents pay about $31,420.

  • 🏠 On-campus housing and dining alone add roughly $16,000 a year at UNR.

  • Community college tuition costs a fraction of university tuition: CSN charges about $136 per lower-division credit for residents.

  • Nonresident tuition runs nearly 3 times the resident rate at both flagship universities.

Cost of Attending College in Nevada: Tuition and Living Costs

Tuition at Nevada's public universities

UNR and UNLV set tuition through the NSHE Board of Regents, and both charge nonresidents nearly 3 times the resident rate. Here is the 2026-2027 breakdown for full-time undergraduates enrolled in 30 credits over the year:

SchoolResident (year)Nonresident (year)
University of Nevada, Reno$11,079$31,268
University of Nevada, Las Vegas$11,231$31,420

Sources: UNR tuition and fees , UNLV cost of attendance .

UNR's resident charge breaks down into $9,383 in base tuition and $1,696 in mandatory fees. UNLV's resident charge works out to roughly $5,516 a semester. Both schools bill by the credit for part-time students, so anyone taking fewer than 15 credits a semester pays proportionally less.

Community college tuition

Nevada's 4 community colleges charge far less per credit than the universities. At College of Southern Nevada , 2026-2027 lower-division rates run $136.25 per credit for residents and $149.75 for nonresidents, before mandatory technology, student union and athletics fees. A full-time resident taking 12 credits pays roughly $1,635 a semester in base registration charges, well under a semester at either university.

Starting at a community college and transferring into UNR, UNLV or Nevada State University later cuts your total 4-year bill substantially, since NSHE credits transfer directly between system schools.

What tuition does not cover

Tuition and fees are only part of your annual budget. UNR's official cost of attendance estimate for 2026-2027 resident undergraduates breaks out housing and food by living situation:

Living situationHousingFood
On campus$8,464$7,488
Off campus$9,748$5,090
With parents$2,132$1,662

Add books and supplies, budgeted around $1,200 a year at UNR, plus transportation and personal expenses, and total annual budgets for a full-time resident undergraduate run from about $21,054 living with family to $32,634 living off campus, per UNR's own worksheet.

UNLV publishes a single combined total instead of a category breakdown. Its 2026-2027 cost of attendance for a resident living on campus comes to $30,683 a year, and $50,284 for a nonresident living on campus, according to UNLV's cost page . Both figures fold in tuition, fees, housing, food, books and personal costs together.

What a 4-year degree costs in tuition alone

Multiplying the annual tuition and fee rate by 4 years gives a rough floor for your total bill, before any financial aid or tuition increases over that span:

SchoolResident, 4 yearsNonresident, 4 years
University of Nevada, Reno$44,316$125,072
University of Nevada, Las Vegas$44,924$125,680

These figures cover tuition and mandatory fees only, hold the 2026-2027 rate flat, and leave out housing, food, books and any tuition increases the Board of Regents approves in later years. Treat them as a starting floor, not a final number.

Financial aid narrows the gap

Nevada's state aid programs cut real money off these totals for students who qualify. The Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship pays up to $10,000 over your undergraduate years for Nevada high school graduates who meet its GPA and coursework requirements, the Silver State Opportunity Grant covers up to $5,500 a year at Nevada's community colleges and Nevada State University for FAFSA filers with a Student Aid Index of 8500 or less, and the Nevada Promise Scholarship pays community college registration fees directly for up to 3 years. Layer federal aid, including the Pell Grant, on top through the FAFSA before you compare final costs across schools.

Building a realistic budget

  • Living with family cuts your total cost the most. Housing and food drop to roughly a quarter of the on-campus rate at UNR.

  • Off-campus housing does not always save money over on-campus dorms once you add utilities, furniture and a longer commute.

  • Nonresident students should compare the sticker price against the Western Undergraduate Exchange discount and against 2 years at community college before committing to full out-of-state tuition.

  • Books run about $1,200 a year at UNR. Budget separately for transportation and personal spending on top of that, since neither school itemizes those categories publicly beyond a combined total.

  • File the FAFSA regardless of income level. It qualifies you for the Silver State Opportunity Grant, the Nevada Promise Scholarship and federal aid, all of which apply before you pay tuition out of pocket.
