Ghana's Cumulative Weighted Average System Explained

Ghanaian public universities score coursework and exams as a percentage, then weight each course by its credit hours to build a Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) out of 100. Your CWA decides your degree class at graduation.
🎓 CWA runs 0 to 100, not 0 to 5 like Nigeria's CGPA
First Class typically needs a CWA of 70 or higher
Second Class Upper usually runs 60 to 69
Second Class Lower usually runs 50 to 59
A CWA below 40 generally fails the course
What the CWA measures
Ghanaian public universities grade each course as a percentage score, then weight that score by the course's credit hours before combining every course you have taken into one cumulative figure. This Cumulative Weighted Average, or CWA, plays the role that CGPA plays in Nigeria and GPA plays in the United States, on a 0 to 100 scale instead of a points scale.
How the CWA is calculated
Multiply each course's percentage score by its credit hours, add those totals together, then divide by the total credit hours for the semester or for your full program. A course with more credit hours pulls your average more strongly than a one-credit elective.
Example
| Course | Credit hours | Score % | Weighted score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Course A | 3 | 75 | 225 |
| Course B | 3 | 62 | 186 |
| Course C | 2 | 58 | 116 |
| Course D | 2 | 80 | 160 |
| Total | 10 | 687 |
CWA = 687 ÷ 10 = 68.7 for this set of courses.
Degree classification bands
At Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), for example, a CWA of 70 or above earns First Class, 60 to 69 earns Second Class Upper, 50 to 59 earns Second Class Lower, and 40 to 49 earns a Pass. KNUST's published grading guide sets out these bands, and most other Ghanaian public universities use the same or very similar cutoffs.
Not every Ghanaian university expresses it the same way
The University of Ghana has moved to a Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) on a 4-point scale rather than a straight percentage CWA, though the underlying classification names stay the same. Under its regulations for undergraduate students , First Class needs an FGPA of 3.60 to 4.00, Second Class Upper needs 3.00 to 3.59, Second Class Lower needs 2.00 to 2.99, Third Class needs 1.50 to 1.99, and Pass needs 1.00 to 1.49.
Check your own university's academic regulations before you assume a specific number. The classification names are shared across Ghana while the underlying scale is not always identical.
Who regulates the standard
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission oversees academic quality across public and private tertiary institutions, though it leaves the exact CWA cutoffs and internal grading policy to each university's own academic board. That is why classification bands stay broadly similar across Ghana without being identical from campus to campus.
How this differs from GPA systems elsewhere in West Africa
Nigeria calculates a CGPA on a 5-point scale where each letter grade converts to a whole number of points before averaging. Ghana's CWA keeps your raw percentage score alive through the whole calculation, only converting to a class label at the end. Both systems produce the same five class names, First Class through Pass, even though the arithmetic behind them looks different.
Why your CWA matters beyond graduation
Graduate schools, professional bodies, and employers in Ghana and abroad use your CWA and degree class to screen applications. Many master's programs set a minimum Second Class Upper for direct admission, and professional courses such as law and medicine set their own extra minimum CWA for progression between years, on top of the general classification bands.
