How DAAD Scholarships Work

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) runs Germany's largest scholarship network for international students, funding full and partial scholarships for master's and PhD study, plus shorter research stays and in-region programs delivered at universities inside Southeast Asia. DAAD is not one scholarship. It is a database of separate programs, each with its own eligibility rules, funding level and deadline, searchable on the DAAD scholarship database by your country, degree level and subject.

Categories Open to ASEAN Applicants

• Full master's and PhD scholarships in Germany, aimed at graduates with at least one degree who apply directly to a DAAD-listed program.

• In-Region and In-Country Programs, where you study at a university inside Southeast Asia rather than in Germany. The DAAD-SEARCA Scholarship Programme is the clearest example: it funds master's and PhD study in agriculture and related fields at partner universities such as the University of the Philippines Los Baños, IPB University and Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia, Kasetsart University in Thailand, and Universiti Putra Malaysia, and it is open to applicants from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.

• Short-term research grants and doctoral research stays for students already enrolled in a graduate program.

DAAD Offices Serving ASEAN Countries

The Jakarta office , open since 1990, is the largest of the three and runs its own advising sessions and application clinics. The Hanoi and Manila offices operate as Information Centres, smaller outposts that help with document questions and connect applicants to the right program, without running their own separate scholarship rounds.

What DAAD Scholarships Typically Cover

Coverage varies by program, but full DAAD scholarships commonly include tuition, a monthly stipend, health, accident and liability insurance, and a travel allowance to and from Germany. Some programs also fund a German language course before your degree starts. Check the individual program page in the database instead of assuming every DAAD scholarship covers the same items, since in-region programs and short research grants fund a narrower set of costs than a full master's scholarship in Germany.

Language Requirements

Some DAAD programs teach entirely in English and only ask for an IELTS or TOEFL score, common in engineering, natural sciences and international development tracks. Others require German at admission or fund a preparatory language course first. Check the language column on each program's database entry instead of assuming your target field runs in English.

Applying

1. Search the DAAD scholarship database by your country of residence and intended degree level to get a shortlist of programs you qualify for.

2. Read that specific program's page for its deadline, required documents and language requirement.

3. Contact your regional DAAD office (Jakarta, Hanoi or Manila) with eligibility questions or to join an information session before you apply.

4. Apply directly through the process listed on the program page. Some programs route through DAAD's own portal, others through the partner university.

Deadlines sit with each program rather than DAAD as a whole, but most master's and PhD scholarships for the following academic year close between October and November. Start collecting documents, including transcripts and reference letters, at least two months before your target program's deadline.
