Data Science and AI Masters in Europe: Strongest Programs and Admission Requirements

Two funded routes worth checking first

Before comparing national programmes on reputation alone, check whether a joint European programme covers your field. Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees and the EIT Digital Master School both fund a share of their students and combine study across multiple countries, which gives you more than one university's network by graduation.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees

Several Erasmus Mundus programmes focus specifically on data science and AI. DEAI (Data Engineering and Artificial Intelligence) runs across Université Libre de Bruxelles, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, TU Wien, the University of Padova and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. EMAI (Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Artificial Intelligence) is a 2-year, 120 ECTS programme delivered by Pompeu Fabra University, Sapienza University of Rome, Radboud University and the University of Ljubljana. A related programme, EDISS , focuses on engineering large-scale intelligent software systems rather than AI research alone.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships generally cover full tuition and add a monthly living allowance for selected students, though exact amounts and application deadlines differ by consortium and change each intake, so confirm current terms directly on each programme's site before applying. Selection is competitive, and moving between at least 2 countries during the degree is a core part of the format, not an option.

EIT Digital Master School

The EIT Digital Master School runs a 2-year track that ends with 2 master's degrees from 2 partner technical universities plus a certificate from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. Data science is one of its specialisation tracks. Admission needs a complete bachelor's degree in a relevant field, proof of English proficiency, a transcript translated into English, a CV, and a motivation letter focused on your innovation potential. The 2026/27 application window runs from 11 February to 15 April 2026 and is open to EU, EEA, Swiss and non-EU applicants, with scholarships awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

National flagship programmes

Outside the joint European format, several universities run standalone data science and AI master's programmes with strong research reputations, including ETH Zurich, the Technical University of Munich and EPFL. These generally admit students with a quantitative bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics or engineering, and expect solid programming and linear algebra or probability groundwork before you start. Admission is competitive and application requirements differ by university and by year, so check the current cycle directly on the university's admissions page rather than relying on older figures.

Choosing between joint and national programmes

Pick a joint programme like DEAI, EMAI or EIT Digital if funding availability matters most to you, or if you want a degree recognised across multiple countries and a built-in international network. Pick a national flagship programme if you want to stay in one location, build a deep relationship with a specific research group, or target a particular country's job market after graduation. Either path works for a data science or AI career, and the strongest applicants often apply to both types in parallel.
