Deferring or Taking a Leave of Absence While Studying Abroad: Visa and Enrollment Consequences for ASEAN Students

TL;DR

A leave of absence has to be approved by your school and recorded properly, or your visa status breaks even if your reason is genuine.

  • 🇬🇧 UK: breaks under 60 days usually leave your visa untouched. Interrupting or withdrawing gets your visa curtailed, and you must leave and reapply when you return.

  • 🇦🇺 Australia: your provider can only defer or suspend your enrollment for compassionate or compelling reasons, and it must record the approval in PRISMS.

  • 🇨🇦 Canada: authorized leave up to 150 days still counts as actively pursuing your studies. Longer than that puts your status at risk.

  • Get written approval before you stop attending. An unapproved gap is treated as a compliance breach, not a break.

Deferring or Taking a Leave of Absence While Studying Abroad: Visa and Enrollment Consequences for ASEAN Students

A break from study is an immigration event

Medical emergencies, family crises and financial shocks happen mid-course, and every destination lets you pause your studies for genuine reasons. What changes your outcome is whether your university and your immigration authority both record the pause as approved before it happens, not after you have already stopped attending.

Deal with your institution first. Your student visa depends entirely on your enrollment status, so an academic decision your school makes about your leave becomes an immigration decision the moment it reports the change.

United Kingdom

If you need a short break, your institution can approve an authorised absence. A break under 60 days generally leaves your visa untouched, as long as you can still complete your course within your current visa's validity.

A longer or unapproved break is different. If you interrupt or withdraw from your course, your Student visa gets curtailed, meaning the Home Office cancels it early. Your university must inform the Home Office within 10 working days of your interruption or withdrawal, and UKVI typically sets your visa to expire around 60 days from the date of that notification. Once curtailed, you need to leave the UK and apply for a new Student visa when you are ready to return to full-time study.

Ask your international student office about authorised absence before you stop attending. It is the mechanism that protects your status, not something you request after the fact.

Australia

Your provider can defer or suspend your enrollment, but only where the National Code recognizes compassionate or compelling circumstances, things genuinely beyond your control such as serious illness, a family bereavement, or a traumatic event. You need to provide evidence supporting your claim, and your provider records the approved deferral in PRISMS, the government's enrollment tracking system.

Deferring for reasons that are not compassionate or compelling, such as wanting extra time to work, is treated as a breach of your course progress obligations under condition 8202 and can put your visa at risk. If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, raise it with your provider's international student support office before requesting the deferral, not after you stop attending classes.

Canada

IRCC recognizes that study permit holders sometimes need a break, and it allows an authorized leave of up to 150 days while still counting you as actively pursuing your studies. This leave has to fit within your program timeline and is generally arranged with your designated learning institution.

Go beyond 150 days, or take an unapproved break, and you risk falling out of compliance with your study permit conditions. Non-compliance affects more than your current permit. It can weaken future immigration applications and, in serious cases, lead to enforcement action. Full detail sits on the official IRCC study permit conditions page .

If a scholarship funds you

Government and agency scholarships such as LPDP, MARA, JPA, OCSC or DOST-SEI each set their own rules on leave of absence, and these often affect your stipend, your bond obligations, or both. Contact your scholarship's program office directly before you request a leave from your university, since approval from your school does not automatically preserve your funding or bond terms.

Documents to gather before you apply

Every destination asks for evidence, not just a written explanation. Medical certificates, a doctor's letter describing the expected recovery period, a death certificate for a family bereavement, or police or news reports for a disaster all strengthen a compassionate or compelling circumstances claim.

Translate any document not already in English, and keep both the original and the translation. Submit your evidence with your leave request rather than promising to send it later, since providers generally will not approve a deferral on a promise alone.

Steps to take before you stop attending

  • Contact your international student office and explain your situation as early as possible, ideally before your health or circumstances force a sudden stop.

  • Ask specifically what evidence they need to approve a compassionate or medical leave.

  • Confirm in writing how the leave affects your visa validity and what you need to do to resume study or re-enter the country.

  • If you receive a scholarship, notify your sponsor in parallel, not after your university has already reported the change.
