Deutschlandticket for students rises again in 2026: what it costs by state

The student Deutschlandsemesterticket costs 34.80 euros a month for the 2026 summer semester, rising to 37.80 euros a month from winter semester 2026-27. Bavaria charges 43 euros a month under its own ticket model, and the price is usually bundled into your mandatory semester fee.
💶 Standard student rate: 34.80 euros/month (summer 2026), rising to 37.80 euros/month (winter 2026-27).
Bavaria's Ermäßigungsticket: 43 euros a month.
Regular non-student Deutschlandticket: 63 euros a month from 1 January 2026.
🏠 Most universities bundle the ticket into your Semesterbeitrag rather than sell it separately.
Some universities offer no mandatory ticket, so check your own enrollment fee breakdown.
What the student ticket costs now
Most German universities that use the solidarity model Deutschlandsemesterticket charge 34.80 euros a month for the 2026 summer semester. That price rises to 37.80 euros a month from the 2026-27 winter semester under the 60 percent cost-sharing model many student unions apply, according to Think Mile .
Both figures sit well below the standard national Deutschlandticket, which costs 63 euros a month for the general public as of 1 January 2026, up from 58 euros in 2025, according to MS in Germany .
What the monthly price adds up to per semester
| Ticket model | Monthly price | Approx. cost per 6 month semester |
|---|---|---|
| Standard student rate, summer 2026 | 34.80 euros | ~209 euros |
| Standard student rate, winter 2026-27 | 37.80 euros | ~227 euros |
| Bavaria (Bayerisches Ermäßigungsticket) | 43 euros | ~258 euros |
| Standard non-student Deutschlandticket | 63 euros | ~378 euros |
The semester totals are simple monthly multiples and can differ slightly from your actual bill, since some Studierendenwerke prorate the ticket across a 5 or 7 month billing period instead of a flat 6 months.
Bavaria runs a different model
Bavaria does not use the standard solidarity ticket. Students there pay for the Bayerisches Ermäßigungsticket, priced at 43 euros a month in 2026. That is still a discount against the 63 euro standard ticket, but higher than the 34.80-37.80 euro range most other states use.
Coverage and pricing differ by Studierendenwerk rather than strictly by state border, so two universities in the same state offer different deals depending on their local transport agreement.
How the ticket gets bundled into your fees
Universities generally use one of three approaches. Some fully subsidize the ticket inside your Semesterbeitrag, so you pay one fee that already includes transport, typically close to 209 euros for the semester. Others offer a partial subsidy, charging a reduced monthly rate of roughly 15-40 euros on top of your normal semester contribution.
A smaller number of universities offer no mandatory transport ticket at all, leaving you to buy the standard 63 euro Deutschlandticket yourself or rely on local-only passes. Your total Semesterbeitrag typically runs 200-450 euros once you add student union fees and other mandatory charges, so check your university's enrollment fee breakdown or ask your AStA (student union) directly before you budget for transport separately.
Why the price keeps rising
The student ticket tracks the price of the standard Deutschlandticket, which itself rose from 58 euros to 63 euros a month at the start of 2026. Student unions negotiate their own discounted rate against that base price, so when the national ticket goes up, the negotiated student rate usually follows within a semester or two.
If your Studierendenwerk has not announced next semester's price yet, budget for the higher end of the range rather than the lower one, since increases have been more common than decreases over the past few price cycles.
What to check before enrolling
Whether your university includes the Deutschlandsemesterticket in your Semesterbeitrag or sells it separately.
Whether you study in Bavaria, where the ticket costs more and works differently.
Whether the price rises again from winter semester 2026-27 under your Studierendenwerk's model.
Whether the ticket covers regional trains for your commute or only local transport within your city.
