Diploma to Degree Bridging: How Kenyan TVET and Diploma Graduates Enter University
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Africa Admissions & Exams
KUCCPS does not coordinate diploma-to-degree bridging; you apply directly to a university, which checks your diploma against Commission for University Education credit transfer rules and places you into the degree at the year that matches how much of the coursework already overlaps.
🎓 Bridging happens through the university's own admissions office, not the KUCCPS portal
📩 A Commission for University Education regulation caps credit transfer at 49% of a programme's total credits
⏱️ Most diploma holders enter a related degree at second year rather than starting from year one
Only certificate, diploma, and degree programmes qualify for this credit transfer route
Bridging Runs Outside KUCCPS
If you hold a diploma or a TVET qualification and want to progress to a degree, KUCCPS placement is not the route. KUCCPS itself confirms that sponsored bridging placement from diploma to degree through its portal is not available, so you apply straight to the university offering the degree programme you want, according to its frequently asked questions .
This means you contact the admissions office of the specific university, submit your diploma transcript and certificate alongside your KCSE result, and go through that institution's own entry process for diploma holders rather than a centralized placement cycle.
How Credit Transfer Works
Universities do not make you restart a related degree from scratch. Kenya's Commission for University Education (CUE) runs a Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (CATS) that lets universities recognise units you already passed in your diploma and exempt you from repeating them in the degree.
CUE regulation caps how much of your destination programme can be built from transferred credit: a university cannot accept more than 49% of a programme's total credits from your prior diploma, certificate, or another degree, per CUE's published standards. Only certificate, diploma, and degree level study qualify for this route, postgraduate credit transfer follows a separate and tighter set of rules.
What This Means for Your Entry Point
Because of the credit cap, most diploma holders join a related degree at second year rather than first, once the university's academic board approves how many of your diploma units map onto the degree curriculum. The exact entry point depends on how closely your diploma content matches the degree; a diploma in a directly related field transfers more credit than one in a loosely related area.
Universities set their own minimum requirements for diploma entrants on top of the CUE cap, commonly a specific KCSE mean grade plus a credit or distinction pass in the diploma. These vary by institution and by programme, so confirm the exact requirement with the department you are applying to before you submit documents.
Steps to Apply
Identify a degree programme related to your diploma or TVET field at your target university.
Contact the admissions or academic registrar's office to request the diploma-holder entry requirements for that programme.
Submit your diploma transcript, certificate, and KCSE result for evaluation.
Wait for the university's credit transfer assessment, which sets your confirmed entry year.
Register once the university issues a formal admission letter stating your entry point.
