Direct Entry Admission in Nigeria: How It Differs from UTME Admission
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Africa Admissions & Exams
Direct Entry lets holders of A Level, National Diploma, or NCE results enter a Nigerian university at 200 level, skipping the UTME exam. You register on a separate JAMB Direct Entry form, and a verification committee checks your qualifications before any offer reaches CAPS.
🎓 A Level route: two relevant passes from IJMB, Cambridge, JUPEB, or the International Baccalaureate, plus three O-level credits.
📩 NCE route: credit passes in two major subjects, plus three other O-level credits.
🏠 ND route: a credit-level National Diploma or National Innovation Diploma plus the O-level requirements for the course.
⏱️ No UTME sitting is required for Direct Entry, but JAMB still verifies every certificate before admission.
What Direct Entry Is
Direct Entry (DE) is the route JAMB runs for candidates who already hold a post-secondary qualification and want to enter a Nigerian university at 200 level instead of 100 level. It exists alongside UTME, the route for candidates entering straight from secondary school through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
You do not sit UTME to qualify for Direct Entry. Your existing qualification, verified by JAMB, is the basis for admission consideration.
Who Qualifies for Direct Entry
Advanced Level (A Level) holders with two passes in subjects relevant to the course, awarded through IJMB, Cambridge, JUPEB, or the International Baccalaureate, alongside three other O-level credits including English and Mathematics where the course requires them.
NCE (Nigeria Certificate in Education) holders with credit passes in two major teaching subjects, plus three other O-level credits.
National Diploma (ND) or National Innovation Diploma (NID) holders with a minimum credit grade in a relevant field, plus the O-level requirements the target course sets.
Each university and course sets its own subject combination requirements on top of these minimums, so check the specific course entry requirements at your target institution before you register.
How the Direct Entry Form Differs from the UTME Form
UTME candidates register for a computer-based exam, sit it, then use their score to apply for admission. Direct Entry candidates register through a separate DE form on the JAMB portal , upload their existing certificates or result awaiting confirmation, and choose their preferred institution and course without sitting any JAMB exam.
Both routes still go through the same CAPS admission system once an institution recommends a candidate, so the accept or reject steps are identical for UTME and Direct Entry offers.
Screening and Verification
JAMB runs every Direct Entry application through a verification committee before admission is finalized. A Level results are checked with the awarding body, and NCE and ND certificates are checked with the issuing institution. JAMB has stated that candidates who submit fake results face prosecution, so only apply with certificates you actually hold, or a genuine statement of result while you wait for the original.
How Direct Entry Offers Appear on CAPS
Once your qualification clears verification and an institution recommends you for its 200 level intake, the offer appears in your CAPS profile the same way a UTME offer does. You accept through biometric verification at an accredited CBT centre, or by sending ACCEPT to 55019 or 66019 from your registered phone number, then print your admission letter for institutional clearance.
