Diversity Fellowships and Pipeline Programs for Grad School

TL;DR

The McNair Scholars program and the SREB Doctoral Scholars Program both prepare students for research careers, with SREB paying a $20,000 yearly stipend once you reach a PhD program. Pipeline programs start earlier than most fellowships and build research skills before you apply to grad school.

  • 🎓 McNair Scholars gives research internship stipends up to $2,800 a year to eligible undergraduates.

  • At least two thirds of McNair participants must be low income and first generation college students.

  • SREB Doctoral Scholars pays $20,000 a year for three years, plus up to five years of tuition and fee coverage.

  • SREB currently partners with eight states, including Georgia, Maryland, and Virginia.

  • Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowships extend this support into the PhD years themselves.

Diversity Fellowships and Pipeline Programs for Grad School

What pipeline programs do differently

Fellowships like the NSF GRFP fund you once you are already in graduate school. Pipeline programs work earlier, building research experience and mentoring relationships during your undergraduate years so you arrive at grad school with a stronger application and a clearer sense of what a research career looks like. Most pipeline programs focus specifically on first generation, low income, and underrepresented students.

Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program

McNair is a federal TRIO program run through individual university chapters, funded by the US Department of Education. It pairs undergraduates with a faculty mentor for a research project, usually over a summer, and pays a stipend of up to $2,800 a year for students who have completed their sophomore year (US Department of Education ). At least two thirds of participants at each chapter must be low income, first generation college students, and the rest come from other groups underrepresented in graduate education.

Beyond the research stipend, McNair chapters typically offer GRE preparation, help with graduate school applications, and campus visits to PhD programs. Since the program runs through individual university chapters rather than one national application, check whether your school hosts a McNair program and what its application cycle looks like.

How to find and apply to a McNair program

McNair operates through individual campus grants, so not every university hosts a chapter, and each one runs its own application timeline. Start by checking your university's TRIO or undergraduate research office for a McNair Scholars program. Apply as early as your sophomore year, since chapters admit a new cohort once a year and require you to have finished your sophomore year before the paid research period begins.

Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program

The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program places undergraduates in an eight to ten week research experience at a partner university, paired with a faculty mentor, plus a stipend and covered housing and travel. Stipend amounts vary by host institution. The University of Pennsylvania site, for example, pays $4,000 for the summer (University of Pennsylvania ). You need a GPA of 3.0 or higher, at least two semesters completed with one remaining, a documented plan to pursue a PhD or MD-PhD, and US citizenship, national status, or permanent residency, since the program does not accept students on an F-1 visa (The Leadership Alliance ).

SREB Doctoral Scholars Program

The Southern Regional Education Board Doctoral Scholars Program funds students who have been admitted to a PhD program and have not yet started their second year of doctoral study. The Doctoral Award pays a $20,000 annual stipend for three years of direct program support, adds two years of institutional support from the scholar's university, and covers up to five years of tuition and fees (SREB ). A separate Dissertation Award pays a one-year $20,000 stipend plus a $500 research allowance for students finishing their dissertation.

SREB currently partners with Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, with Louisiana running its own related competition. You need to apply to or already attend a participating institution in one of these states to qualify.

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship

The Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship extends diversity focused funding into the PhD years across most research fields, not limited to any one state or region. It pays $27,000 a year for three years, and its mission centers on increasing the diversity of college and university faculty nationwide (National Academies ). Many McNair Scholars and SREB Doctoral Scholars go on to apply for a Ford fellowship once they reach a PhD program, since the programs share a similar mission.

Why these programs matter to admissions committees

A research stipend from McNair or the Leadership Alliance signals to PhD admissions committees that you already know how to work on a research project day to day, not only in a classroom. Committees read a strong pipeline program on your application as evidence you understand what graduate research work involves, which matters more to them than a slightly higher GPA earned without research experience.

These programs do not cost you anything to apply

Every program covered here is free to apply to, and most also cover your travel and housing during the summer research phase. None of these opportunities require an application fee, so cost should never be the reason you skip applying to one.

How to use these programs together

  • Start with McNair or the Leadership Alliance SR-EIP as an undergraduate to build a research record.

  • Ask your McNair mentor to help identify PhD programs with strong placement and funding for underrepresented students.

  • Apply to SREB Doctoral Scholars as soon as you are admitted to a participating state's PhD program, since you must apply before starting your second year.

  • Layer a Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship application on top of your existing departmental funding once you reach grad school.

  • Ask current scholars in these programs about the mentoring and community support, since that support often matters as much as the stipend.

Layering these programs works best if you start early. A McNair research experience during your sophomore or junior year strengthens your PhD applications, and SREB or Ford funding then covers the doctorate itself, so treat pipeline programs as the first step in a longer funding plan rather than a one-time award.
