Early Admission at UBC and SFU on Grade 11 Marks: How Conditional Offers Work

Why an early offer is not a final one

Grade 12 final marks do not exist until June, months after applications open. Universities that admit direct-entry BC high school students still need to make decisions before then, so they review what is available at the time: your completed Grade 11 courses and your in-progress Grade 12 marks. An offer built on that partial record is a conditional offer. It becomes final only once your actual Grade 12 results confirm you met the requirements the offer was based on.

How UBC's timeline works

UBC reviews BC high school applications on a continuous basis rather than in a single batch. For the 2026-27 admission cycle, UBC has issued decisions on a rolling basis from November 2025 through June 2026. Applicants who submit complete applications earlier in that window can receive a decision months before their final Grade 12 marks are set, based on their Grade 11 final marks and whatever Grade 12 interim marks are available.

UBC requires BC and Canadian high school applicants to complete all required courses, including distance and distributed-learning courses, by June 30 before the September start. Your school transmits the official transcript that UBC uses to confirm the conditional offer, so keeping your school's records current matters as much as hitting the course-completion date itself.

What conditional actually means

A conditional offer sets out the courses and grade range you need to maintain through the rest of Grade 12. If your final marks land within that range and you complete every required course, the offer stands and becomes your confirmed admission. If your final marks fall well short of what the offer assumed, or you do not complete a required prerequisite course, the university can revisit the offer. UBC states plainly that final transcripts are required to finalize any conditional offer, which is the mechanism behind that check.

This is why counsellors tell students not to relax academically once an early offer arrives. The offer reflects your record at the time of review, not a guarantee independent of your actual Grade 12 finish.

How SFU's timeline compares

SFU publishes application windows by term rather than a single deadline. For Fall 2027 entry, SFU's application window runs from October 1 to January 31, 2026-27, with separate windows for Spring and Summer terms. As with UBC, SFU reviews direct-entry BC applications well before final Grade 12 marks exist, using the marks on file at the time of review, and any resulting offer depends on your final transcript confirming you met the requirements.

What you can control

• Keep your Grade 12 marks at or above what any conditional offer specifies through the full year, not just the term you applied in

• Submit your application as early as your school allows, since earlier submissions can mean an earlier decision

• Track every deadline tied to your offer, including transcript submission dates, separately from your original application deadline

• Contact the admissions office directly if a serious circumstance affects your final marks, rather than waiting for the university to notice a gap

• Confirm your school has transmitted your final transcript. A missed submission can affect a conditional offer as much as a mark drop

Why rolling admission exists at all

Reviewing every application in one batch after final Grade 12 marks come out in June would leave universities weeks to process tens of thousands of files before a September start. Rolling review spreads that work across the school year and gives students an earlier answer, which matters for planning housing, scholarships, and other offers. The tradeoff is that an early answer is built on an incomplete record, which is exactly why it comes with conditions attached.

Reading your own conditional offer letter

• Note every course the offer lists as required, not just your overall average

• Note the specific grade range or minimum the offer expects you to maintain

• Note your course-completion deadline separately from your original application deadline

• Save the offer letter itself. If a serious circumstance affects your Grade 12 year, you want the exact wording of what was promised
