What Education City is
Education City is a campus district in Doha built and run by Qatar Foundation, a nonprofit chartered by the Qatari government. It groups branch campuses of several foreign universities on one site, alongside a homegrown institution, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and shared research and student life facilities.
Each branch campus operates under its own home institution's name and curriculum, and the degree is awarded by the parent university rather than by a separate Qatari entity. A degree from Texas A&M University at Qatar reads as a Texas A&M University degree, not a Qatar-only credential. Note that Texas A&M's Board of Regents voted in February 2024 to close the Qatar campus, no incoming class has been admitted since Fall 2024, and the campus is winding down toward full closure by 2028, with its engineering programs being absorbed into Hamad Bin Khalifa University, so it is not a live application option for a prospective Canadian applicant.

Each campus admits students through its own application process, separate from the others, and most follow the same academic calendar, grading and graduation requirements as the home campus.
How tuition actually works
Qatar Foundation covers tuition for Qatari nationals who qualify at any Education City campus. Everyone else, including Canadian applicants, pays the tuition rate the home institution publishes for its Doha program, set independently by each university and not standardized across the district.
Rates change from year to year and differ by program, since an MD track costs far more than an undergraduate design degree. Check the tuition page each institution publishes for its Doha campus before you budget, rather than relying on the home campus's US or French sticker price. Financial aid also varies by campus: some offer need-based aid to non-Qatari students, others do not.
Does the degree carry the same accreditation as the home campus
Each of these seven branches operates as an academic extension of its home university, and the degree generally carries the same institutional and program accreditation as one earned on the US or French home campus. Carnegie Mellon Qatar's computer science degree, for instance, sits under the same Carnegie Mellon accreditation as the Pittsburgh program.
That matters if you plan to apply to graduate school in Canada or have a Canadian credential assessment service such as WES evaluate the degree later. The assessment looks at the degree-granting institution and its accreditation, not the physical location where you studied.
Applying from Canada
You apply directly to the branch campus you want, using that university's own admission portal and deadlines, not a shared Education City application. Entry requirements mirror the home campus, including standardized test scores for the American branches, English proficiency scores and transcripts, and interviews happen in person in Doha or remotely.
Visa sponsorship, on-campus housing and student services run through Qatar Foundation for all seven campuses, so admitted students deal with one office for logistics even though academics stay separate per university.
Weigh it against other Gulf options
Compare Education City against branch campuses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi before you commit, since program mix, cost and campus size differ across the two countries. A Canadian student choosing between an engineering degree at Texas A&M Qatar and a similar program at a UAE branch campus should compare published tuition, accreditation and post-graduation work rules side by side.
Life on a shared campus district
Education City functions as one district with shared libraries, a student center, sports facilities and dining options that all seven branch campuses draw on together, even though each keeps its own faculty, classrooms and student body. You get access to a larger community than a single small branch campus would offer on its own, while still graduating with a degree from one specific university.
Qatar Foundation runs student housing across the district, so most students, Qatari and international alike, live inside the same residential system regardless of which of the seven universities they attend.
How studying here differs from a Canadian degree
Class sizes at Education City branches run smaller than a typical Canadian university, closer to the scale of the home campus's own selective cohort, since each branch admits a limited class every year. Expect a tighter cohort and more direct access to faculty than a large first-year Canadian lecture hall usually offers.
