Engineering Degrees in Europe: Bologna Bachelor-Master vs German Diplom-Ingenieur Legacy

Most of Europe now runs engineering degrees on the Bologna model of a bachelor's followed by a master's, but Germany's older Diplom-Ingenieur system and France's grande école diploma still shape how some countries structure engineering education. The EUR-ACE label is the accreditation mark that signals quality across all of these systems.

One profession, several degree structures
Engineering education in Europe did not fully standardize after the Bologna reforms the way many other subjects did. Most countries moved to the standard bachelor-master split, but Germany's Diplom-Ingenieur tradition and France's grande école system kept features that predate Bologna, and both still shape how employers read an engineering CV today.
The Bologna bachelor-master structure
Under Bologna, an engineering bachelor's typically runs 3 to 4 years and carries 180 to 240 ECTS credits. A master's adds 60 to 120 ECTS over 1 to 2 years. Most countries, including Poland, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries, use this split for engineering exactly as they do for other subjects, with a separate application step between bachelor's and master's.
This structure gives you an exit point after the bachelor's, which some students use to enter the job market early or switch specialisation for the master's. Employers across the EU generally treat a Bologna-compliant engineering master's as the standard reference qualification for a professional engineering role.
Germany's Diplom-Ingenieur legacy
Before Bologna, German engineers earned a Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.), an integrated degree usually taking 5 years with no separate bachelor's exit. Germany converted almost all of these into separate bachelor and master programmes during the 2000s and 2010s to align with the rest of the EU. A handful of technical universities kept integrated Diplom tracks for select fields, and the title still appears on the CVs of engineers who graduated before the reform. Where you see Dipl.-Ing. today, treat it as broadly equivalent to a Bologna master's in engineering.
France's grande école diploma
France runs a parallel system through its grandes écoles d'ingénieurs. Students typically enter after 2 years of classes préparatoires and complete a 3-year cycle at the school, for a 5-year total. The result is the diplôme d'ingénieur, a title protected by the French state and automatically recognised as carrying master's-level status (grade de master), rather than a separate bachelor's plus master's earned as two distinct qualifications. Graduates of these schools compete directly with Bologna master's holders for engineering roles across the EU.
The UK's chartered route
UK universities offer both a 3-year BEng and a 4-year integrated MEng. An accredited MEng normally satisfies the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status on its own. A BEng graduate usually needs further learning, such as a separate master's or approved work-based study, to reach the same academic base before applying for CEng through the Engineering Council.
Why EUR-ACE matters more than the label on your degree
The EUR-ACE label , run by the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE), accredits engineering bachelor's and master's programmes against a shared set of standards regardless of the national degree structure underneath. Authorised accreditation agencies currently operate in countries including Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK. Check whether a specific programme holds the label through the ENAEE database before you apply.
For you as a student, this means the exact degree structure matters less than whether the programme carries EUR-ACE accreditation. A EUR-ACE-labelled bachelor's from Poland and an integrated Diplom-equivalent from Germany send the same quality signal to an employer, even though they were built on different national templates.
