What ENIC-NARIC Actually Does
ENIC-NARIC stands for the European Network of Information Centres and the National Academic Recognition Information Centres. Together they form a network covering 56 countries that signed the Lisbon Recognition Convention , the treaty that governs how countries recognize each other's education qualifications.
Each participating country runs one national center. That center evaluates foreign diplomas and degrees so universities, employers, and immigration offices in that country know how a qualification from outside its borders compares to a local one. If you hold a Philippine, Vietnamese, Indonesian, or any other ASEAN diploma and want to study in France, Germany, the Netherlands, or another European country, that country's national center is the body that reviews your paperwork.
How the Evaluation Works
Experts at the national center research your specific qualification using official sources, education-system databases, and direct contact with counterpart centers in other countries, including your home country's education ministry if needed. They score your diploma against 10 standard criteria set under the Lisbon Recognition Convention, covering the diploma's level, the years of study behind it, and whether the issuing institution is officially recognized.
You supply the documents the center needs: your degree certificate or diploma, full transcript of records, and a diploma supplement if your school issued one. Missing documents are the most common reason evaluations stall, so gather certified copies and translations before you submit.
Why ASEAN Students Should Check This Before Applying
Secondary education length varies across ASEAN. The Philippines shifted to a K-12 system, and the first Senior High School graduates under that system completed in 2018, giving them 12 years of basic education before university. Malaysia, Singapore, and several other ASEAN countries run 12-year secondary tracks unless a student adds a two-year pre-university stage like Malaysia's STPM.
Most European countries built their university entrance requirements around 13 years of combined primary and secondary schooling. A 12-year ASEAN diploma commonly falls one year short, exactly the kind of gap an ENIC-NARIC evaluation flags before you submit a full university application, not after a rejection.
