Ethiopia's University Academic Calendar and Semester System
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Apr 15, 2025 • Education Planning
Ethiopian public universities run two semesters a year, entry depends on the national Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Examination (EHEEE) at the end of grade 12, and many programs now require students to pass a national exit exam before they graduate.
🎓 Public universities run two semesters, roughly September or October to January and February to June or July.
📩 The EHEEE, sat at the end of grade 12, determines both university eligibility and your field track.
Nearly all undergraduate programs now require a national exit exam near the end of your final year before you receive your degree.
⏱️ Calendars can shift at individual universities due to local disruptions, so check your own institution's dates rather than assuming a fixed national schedule.
Two Semesters, Set by Each University
Ethiopian public universities generally teach across two semesters a year. First semester typically runs from around September or October to January, and second semester runs from around February to June or July, with breaks between them. As in most African university systems, the Ministry of Education sets national policy and standards, but individual universities set their own precise resumption and exam dates within that structure, so exact dates differ between Addis Ababa University, Jimma University, Bahir Dar University and other institutions.
How Students Reach University
Ethiopia's secondary system separates general education from university preparation partway through high school. Students who continue toward university complete grades 11 and 12 as preparatory years, then sit the Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Examination (EHEEE) at the end of grade 12. The exam determines both whether a student qualifies for university admission and which broad field, natural science or social science, they are placed into, according to an overview of the exam's role . Passing thresholds and exact quotas are set and published each year, so treat any specific score you hear about as tied to a particular year rather than a fixed universal cut-off.
A Typical Year at a Glance
| Period | Roughly when |
|---|---|
| EHEEE (grade 12 entrance exam) | End of the school year |
| First semester | September or October to January |
| Semester break | A few weeks |
| Second semester | February to June or July |
The National Exit Exam
Beyond the entrance exam, Ethiopia added a national exit exam requirement that now applies to nearly all undergraduate programs (expanded from law and medicine only to all 238 undergraduate disciplines starting around 2023), administered under quality oversight from bodies such as HERQA. Students in covered fields sit this exam near the end of their final year, and passing it is a condition for receiving the degree, separate from passing individual courses at your own university. If your programme is one that requires this exit exam, build revision time for it into your final-year planning rather than treating your last semester as finished once coursework and internal exams are done.
Requirements, covered fields and pass thresholds for the exit exam are set centrally and can change from one cohort to the next, so confirm the current requirement for your specific programme with your department rather than relying on what an earlier cohort experienced.
Why Some Calendars Run Late
Not every Ethiopian university stays on the same calendar every year. Conflict and local disruptions in parts of the country have delayed the academic calendar at specific universities in the past, pushing resumption or exam periods later than usual at the affected institutions while others continued on schedule. If you are enrolled at, or considering, a university in a region that has experienced this kind of disruption, check that specific institution's current calendar rather than assuming the national pattern applies evenly everywhere.
Checking Your Own Dates
Confirm your university's semester start and exam dates directly with your registrar, since the general September to June shape can shift at individual institutions.
If your programme includes a national exit exam, ask your department when it falls in your final year and what the current pass requirement is.
Do not assume a fixed national calendar applies uniformly. Regional conditions have shifted the calendar at specific universities in the past.
