TL;DR

Wise and N26 let you open an account and get an IBAN before you leave home, using only your passport. Revolut and bunq also work for many nationalities, but you should confirm current fees and requirements in the app before you rely on them.

  • 📩 Apply from your phone, verify with your passport, get an IBAN in days

  • 💶 Wise charges no monthly fee and a one-time 7 GBP card fee, with 250 GBP in free ATM withdrawals a month

  • 💶 N26's Standard plan is free, with 2 free euro ATM withdrawals a month

  • 🏠 A landlord, employer, or blocked account provider in your destination country may still want a local traditional bank later

Opening a European Bank Account Before You Arrive: Neobanks Compared

Why open before you arrive

Landing with a working card and an IBAN saves you from carrying cash or relying on your home bank's foreign transaction fees during your first weeks. Neobanks built for digital signup let you do this from home, since they verify your identity through the app instead of requiring you to show up at a branch with a local address.

Wise

Wise is not a bank. It operates as an electronic money institution and issues a multi-currency account with an IBAN you can use like a regular European account. The debit card has no monthly subscription fee, only a one-time card fee of 7 GBP, and you get 250 GBP in free ATM withdrawals a month before a 2.69 percent fee applies on the excess (Wise pricing ). You can apply with just your passport and start moving money in before you travel.

N26

N26 is a licensed bank with a fully free Standard plan. You need to be at least 18 and resident in one of the countries it supports, and you verify your identity directly in the app rather than at a branch (N26 pricing ). The Standard plan includes 2 free ATM withdrawals in euros a month, with a 1.7 percent fee on withdrawals outside the eurozone.

Revolut

Revolut offers a free Standard plan alongside paid Plus, Premium, and Metal tiers that raise ATM withdrawal limits and add features like travel insurance. Revolut works well for students who want one app for spending in multiple currencies, and account opening is remote through the app. Fees and free withdrawal limits change between plans and over time, so check the current numbers in the app or on Revolut's own pricing page before you commit.

bunq

bunq does not offer a permanently free plan. Every bunq account runs on a paid monthly subscription, which buys you a Dutch IBAN, a real debit card, and features like instant spending notifications. Confirm the current plan prices on bunq's own site, since they have changed more than once in recent years.

Step by step: setting up before you move

  1. Download the app of your chosen provider and start the signup flow with your passport, not a national ID card, since passports scan more reliably for non-resident applicants.

  2. Complete the video or photo identity check the app requests. Do this somewhere with strong lighting and a stable internet connection.

  3. Once approved, you get an IBAN immediately inside the app, even before your physical card arrives.

  4. Fund the account with a transfer from your home bank or a wallet like Wise, so you have working funds before you land.

  5. Order the physical card to your home address, or set the delivery address to arrive after you have secured housing, depending on the provider's shipping options.

  6. Update your address in the app once you have a confirmed place to live, since most providers require this for full account features.

What still needs a local branch visit

A neobank account solves day-to-day spending, but it does not always satisfy every local requirement. Some landlords and employers still expect a traditional local bank account for rent payments or payroll. Germany's blocked account visa requirement needs a specific approved provider, not any neobank. Some university dormitories and phone contracts also run credit checks that favor an established local bank. Treat your neobank account as your bridge for the first weeks, and open a local account afterward if your situation calls for it.
