France's Long-Stay Student Visa (VLS-TS) as a Residence Permit: What Canadian Students Do After Arrival

TL;DR

A Canadian student's VLS-TS visa works as a residence permit only after you validate it online within 3 months of landing in France. Skip that step and you fall out of legal status even though the visa sticker in your passport still looks valid.

  • 📩 Validate on administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr, the ANEF platform, not at a prefecture desk.

  • ⏱️ You have 3 months from your arrival date to validate.

  • 💵 Validation costs 100 euros, paid online by card.

  • 🏠 The VLS-TS is issued for 4 months to 1 year. Near the end of that period, you apply for your first full residence permit, between 2 and 4 months before it expires.

France's Long-Stay Student Visa (VLS-TS) as a Residence Permit: What Canadian Students Do After Arrival

Your visa is not finished working when you land

A Canadian student going to France for more than 3 months gets a VLS-TS, a long-stay visa that also functions as a residence permit (visa de long sejour valant titre de sejour). The visa sticker in your passport lets you enter France, but it does not, by itself, keep you legal for your whole stay. You still need to validate it online after you arrive, and this step is easy to overlook once orientation week, housing and course registration take over your first days.

Validating your VLS-TS

Create an account on administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr, the ANEF portal run by the Ministry of the Interior, and select the visa validation option. You enter your visa number, passport details and French address, then pay the validation fee online by credit card. Since 2017 there is no physical sticker or stamp added at this stage. The PDF attestation you download from ANEF is your proof of validation, and you should keep a copy on your phone and print one for your records, since you may need to show it to open a bank account, register with CAF, or cross a Schengen border before your first residence permit is issued.

You have 3 months from your arrival date in France to complete this step. Miss the deadline and you fall into irregular status even though your visa still physically looks valid, which can cause problems opening a bank account, renewing your visa later, or crossing back into the Schengen area (service-public.gouv.fr ). Set a reminder for this deadline the day you land, rather than waiting until classes settle down.

What validation costs

Validating a student VLS-TS costs 150 euros as of October 2026, paid exclusively online during the ANEF process. Pay by credit card only. There is no option to pay in person or by transfer for this step (service-public.gouv.fr ). Budget for this fee separately from tuition and the CVEC, since it comes due in your first weeks in France alongside your housing deposit and first month's rent.

How long the VLS-TS lasts, and what comes next

Your VLS-TS is issued for a period of 4 months to 1 year, matching the length of your program for that first year. It does not renew itself. As it nears expiry, apply online through ANEF for your first full residence permit (carte de sejour), starting the process between 2 and 4 months before your VLS-TS runs out. Missing this window and letting your status lapse creates the same irregular-status problems as missing the initial validation deadline, so calendar the date the week you arrive, not the week your visa expires.

While your renewal application is under review, the prefecture normally issues a receipt (recepisse) confirming your file is being processed, which keeps you in legal status while you wait for a decision. Do not assume this happens automatically, though. Confirm with your prefecture or through your ANEF account that your application has been logged before you travel outside France, since you do not want to be caught abroad with an expired document and no proof a renewal is pending.

What the VLS-TS lets you do while it is valid

Once validated, your VLS-TS with the student mention lets you open a French bank account, register for CAF housing aid where eligible, and work part-time up to the standard student cap. Student VLS-TS holders do not sign a Contrat d'Integration Republicain, the integration contract required of some other long-stay visa categories, so plan your first weeks around the visa validation, university enrollment, housing and bank account, in that order, rather than an integration course appointment.

Short programs work differently

The VLS-TS applies to programs longer than 3 months. If you are going to France for a short exchange or summer program under that length, you typically travel on a short-stay Schengen visa instead, which does not require ANEF validation or the OFII fee, but also does not function as a residence permit. Confirm with your host institution and the French consulate which visa category fits your specific program length before you apply, since applying for the wrong category can delay your departure.

What your renewal file needs

For your first full residence permit renewal, expect to resubmit proof of continued enrollment, updated proof of financial resources, and your current address, similar to what you provided for your original visa application. Start gathering these documents the same month you begin your ANEF renewal request, since prefectures process a complete file faster than one submitted with pieces missing.

Treat the visa validation fee, the CVEC and your housing deposit as three separate line items due in your first month, and confirm each deadline separately rather than assuming one payment covers everything.
