TL;DR

University counseling is usually faster and free, so try it before you wait for a national health system referral.

  • 📩 UK: NHS talking therapy waits run long in some areas, but campus wellbeing services often see you within days, contact them first and self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies as backup

  • 🏠 France: BAPU offices are free, no referral needed, only a student card and social security number

  • 🎓 Spain: each public university runs its own free SAP psychology service, open directly to enrolled students

  • Italy: check your university's own student office for its counseling service before searching public options

  • ⏱️ Campus services almost always respond faster than national public health routes

Where to get free or fast student mental health support across Europe

Try your university first

University counseling is normally free and faster to reach than a national health system referral. Every country in this guide runs some kind of on-campus route, and in most cases you skip the GP or a public waiting list completely. Learn which route your country uses before you need it, not after.

United Kingdom: campus wellbeing services vs NHS therapy

Student mental health pressure in the UK runs high. 37% of first-year students report moderate to severe depression or anxiety symptoms, and over 60% of higher education students describe high levels of stress, anxiety or depression, according to figures compiled by Mental Health First Aid Course . About 1 in 5 students has a probable mental health problem, and 40% of LGBTQ+ students report a mental health condition, against 15% of non-LGBTQ+ students.

NHS Talking Therapies targets seeing 75% of referred patients within 6 weeks and 95% within 18 weeks. As of January 2026, 88.7% of referrals nationally waited under 6 weeks, according to NHS England Digital . Local waits vary a lot by area, and some regions run well behind that national average.

Contact your university's wellbeing or counseling service before you contact your GP. Most UK universities let you self-refer for free sessions with no referral letter, and campus services usually book you in faster than an NHS Talking Therapies list during term time, per NHS England's access standards page . Keep the NHS route as a backup for ongoing or specialist care once your campus service points you there. Two UK-wide backup options exist too: Student Space, a free service built for students under pressure with exams or deadlines, and Nightline, a student-run overnight listening line active at many universities.

France: BAPU offices, free with no referral

France runs a network of Bureaux d'Aide Psychologique Universitaire (BAPU), free consultation centers for students staffed by psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. Any student with a valid student card and student social security cover can register directly, with no doctor referral needed, according to etudiant.gouv.fr .

Sessions are covered 100% by social security and top-up insurance (mutuelle), so you pay nothing upfront. About half of the students who come stay for fewer than 3 months, and there's no fixed session limit if you need longer support, per Campus France . Find your nearest BAPU through your local student services office or the etudiant.gouv.fr directory.

Spain: university psychology services (SAP)

Spanish public universities run their own free psychology support service for students, usually called Servicio de Atencion Psicologica (SAP). More than half of students said they needed psychological support in the last term, according to a study cited by Spain's government press office .

Each university runs its own SAP, so there's no single national booking page. Search your university's name together with "servicio de atencion psicologica" or check your student portal to find your local office and book directly. Support covers anxiety, adjustment problems, depression, relationship issues and academic stress.

Italy: check your university's own service

Italian universities run their own free counseling desks for enrolled students, often listed under the student wellbeing or "sportello di ascolto" section of the university website. Booking systems and typical wait times differ by university and aren't published in one central place, so contact your university's student office or international office directly to find your local service and how to book it.

Exchange and international students are covered too

Studying in another European country does not usually shut you out of these services. In France, Erasmus and other exchange students registered for the year and covered by student social security can use BAPU on the same terms as local students. In Spain and Italy, international and exchange students count as enrolled students, so they qualify for university SAP or counseling desk access once registered, check with your international office to confirm your status counts.

What to expect at your first appointment

Most university services start with a short intake meeting rather than moving straight into therapy. A counselor asks about your situation and points you to the right kind of support, whether that's a few sessions, a support group, or a referral to a specialist. Bring your student ID and be ready to describe what's going on in plain terms, you don't need a diagnosis or a doctor's letter to start.

Move faster in a crisis

  • Find your university's counseling page before you need it, and save the booking link or phone number.

  • Ask if drop-in slots exist, they usually move faster than scheduled bookings.

  • In the UK, self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies online as a backup while you wait on a campus list, since self-referral skips the GP step.

  • For an urgent crisis, use a national helpline rather than wait for a routine appointment. Ask your student union or international office for the current local number.
