TL;DR

Gabon runs two public universities, Université Omar Bongo in Libreville and USTM in Franceville, alongside several specialized state schools and a small private sector. Entry needs the baccalauréat, and public tuition stays low because the state subsidizes it heavily.

  • 🎓 Université Omar Bongo (UOB): Faculty of Law and Economic Sciences, Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences

  • 🎓 USTM in Franceville: Faculty of Sciences, École Polytechnique de Masuku, INSAB agronomy institute

  • Specialized state schools cover teaching, administration, medicine, law, IT and forestry

  • Apply directly to the university's scolarité office with your baccalauréat, ID and photos

  • Check CAMES accreditation before choosing a private institute

Universities in Gabon: Admission, Costs and How to Apply

Public universities in Gabon

Université Omar Bongo (UOB) in Libreville is Gabon's flagship public university. It started in 1970 as the Université Nationale du Gabon and took its current name in 1978. UOB enrolled around 34,000 students as of 2021, taught across two faculties: the Faculty of Law and Economic Sciences (FDSE) and the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences (FLSH).

Université des Sciences et Techniques de Masuku (USTM) in Franceville opened under a law passed in January 1986. It covers three divisions: the Faculty of Sciences (chemistry, biology, geology, mathematics-physics), the École Polytechnique de Masuku for engineering degrees, and INSAB, an agronomy and biotechnology institute. USTM belongs to the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie and the Association of African Universities. Its campus went through rehabilitation work in 2024.

Specialized state schools

Beyond UOB and USTM, Gabon trains students for specific professions through standalone state schools, each with its own entrance process on top of the baccalauréat.

Each of these schools sets its own entrance exam or interview after you clear the baccalauréat requirement. Many attach a quota tied to civil service or sector hiring needs.

Choosing a program

If you want law, economics, or humanities, UOB in Libreville is the natural choice. If you want sciences, engineering, or agronomy, USTM in Franceville fits better. For a specific profession such as teaching, public administration, medicine, law, or forestry, apply directly to the matching state school instead of a general university. Compare each option against your career goal before you commit. Transferring between faculties later adds time to your degree.

Private universities and institutes

A smaller private sector has grown around Libreville and Port-Gentil, mostly offering business, IT, and health-related diplomas. Before you enroll at a private institute, confirm its accreditation with CAMES (Conseil Africain et Malgache pour l'Enseignement Supérieur), the regional body that certifies degrees across French-speaking Africa. A CAMES-recognized diploma carries weight across member states. An unaccredited one does not.

Admission requirements

The baccalauréat is the entry ticket to any Gabonese university. You register directly with the university's admissions or scolarité office rather than through a national portal, submitting your baccalauréat certificate, national ID or birth certificate, passport photos, and a completed registration form.

Programs follow the LMD structure (Licence, Master, Doctorat) used across CAMES member states. A Licence takes three years, a Master two more, and a Doctorat follows further research study. This structure lines up Gabonese degrees with those from neighboring CEMAC countries and France, which makes transfers and further study elsewhere simpler.

Academic calendar

The academic year at Gabonese universities typically opens in October and runs into the following June or July, split into two semesters under the LMD system. Exams take place at the end of each semester, and each validated semester earns you credits toward your Licence, Master, or Doctorat. Missing the October opening can mean waiting a full year for the next intake, so confirm your registration dates before the break ends.

Language and regional recognition

Every public and private program in Gabon teaches in French, so strong French matters more than English for admission and daily coursework. Gabon's LMD structure and CAMES accreditation line up with its CEMAC neighbors, Cameroon, Congo, Central African Republic, Chad, and Equatorial Guinea, and with France, so credits and diplomas earned in Gabon carry weight if you study or work elsewhere in the region afterward.

Costs

Public universities in Gabon charge a modest annual registration fee rather than Western-style tuition, since the government subsidizes public higher education heavily. Private institutes set their own fees, usually higher, and these vary by program and provider. Ask about registration fees, student card fees, and any lab or practical fees separately, since specialized programs such as engineering or medicine often add costs beyond the base registration. Budget separately for housing, food, books, and transport. Over a full year these often add up to more than the registration fee itself.
