Gates Cambridge Scholarship Eligibility for ASEAN Citizens
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 03, 2026 • Scholarships & Funding, Study in Southeast Asia
Gates Cambridge funds a full PhD, MLitt or one year postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge for citizens of any country outside the UK, including all ASEAN nationals. You apply for the scholarship inside the same application you submit for your Cambridge course, not on a separate form.
🎓 Covers full course fees plus a maintenance allowance for your entire Cambridge course
Open to citizens of any non-UK country, so all 11 ASEAN nationalities qualify
Judged on 4 criteria: intellectual ability, course fit, commitment to improving others' lives, and leadership
📩 For October 2027 entry, applications reopen September 2026
International round deadline: 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on your course
Who is eligible
Gates Cambridge is open to citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom applying for full-time postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge. Because eligibility is citizenship-based rather than a fixed country list, every ASEAN nationality qualifies: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam all count.
Eligible courses are PhD programmes (full-time, and a part-time pilot track), full-time MLitt degrees, and most one-year full-time postgraduate courses. The scholarship excludes undergraduate degrees, the MASt, professional degrees like the MBA, EMBA and MFin, the PGCE, and clinical courses. If you are already studying at Cambridge, you apply for funding toward a new qualification, such as moving from an MPhil into a PhD, but not for the remainder of a course you are already partway through.
What the scholarship covers
Gates Cambridge is a full-cost award. It pays your Cambridge course fees in full and gives a maintenance allowance to cover living costs, for the entire length of your course, whether that is one year for a taught master's or up to 4 years for a PhD.
How the selection works
Every application is judged against 4 equally weighted criteria:
Outstanding intellectual ability, shown through your academic record and past work
A clear, specific reason for choosing your exact course at Cambridge
A demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of others
Leadership capacity, shown through initiating change or bringing people together
Applicants who score well only on academic ability and weak on the other 3 criteria are not competitive. Gates Cambridge looks for a combination of intellectual strength and social impact, not grades alone.
How to apply
There is no separate Gates Cambridge application form. You apply for Gates Cambridge funding inside the same Graduate Application Portal submission you use to apply to your Cambridge course. The combined application includes the standard admission and college placement sections, a funding section with Gates Cambridge-specific questions, a dedicated Gates Cambridge reference in addition to your two academic references, and a research proposal if you are applying for a PhD.
Apply to your Cambridge course and select Gates Cambridge as a funding option in the same submission. Missing the course application deadline removes you from consideration for the scholarship too, since the two run on the same form.
Deadlines for October 2027 entry
| Applicant group | Deadline |
|---|---|
| US citizens resident in the USA | 14 October 2026 |
| All other applicants, including ASEAN | 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on course |
Applications for October 2027 entry reopen in September 2026. Your exact deadline depends on the Cambridge course you are applying to, listed in the University's Course Directory, so confirm your specific date once you have chosen a course rather than assuming the earlier or later date applies.
Gates Cambridge versus other Cambridge funding
Cambridge offers other scholarships alongside Gates Cambridge, including college-specific bursaries and departmental studentships. Unlike many of those awards, Gates Cambridge reviews every application centrally through the same 4 criteria regardless of subject or college, so a strong application competes on the same basis whether you study engineering, law or literature.
What ASEAN applicants often get wrong
Applicants sometimes submit a strong course-fit statement but a thin answer on commitment to improving the lives of others. Reviewers want a specific example, such as a project you built or a group you led that produced a measurable outcome for people outside your own circle, not a general statement of values. A second common gap is applying to a course that does not clearly build toward a stated future plan, weakening the course-fit criterion even when the academic profile is strong.
After you win the scholarship
Gates Cambridge Scholars join the Gates Cambridge community for the length of their course, with access to a dedicated scholars' programme covering skills training, community events and a mentoring network run separately from your academic department. This runs alongside your Cambridge degree, not instead of your department's own support structures.
The research proposal for PhD applicants
PhD applicants submit a research proposal as part of the combined application, separate from the standard personal statement required for Cambridge admission. Gates Cambridge reviewers read this proposal alongside your course-fit answer, so keep the two consistent: your proposal should describe the specific research question you plan to pursue, and your course-fit answer should explain why Cambridge and your chosen supervisor fit that specific question.
Frequently asked questions
Do you apply before or after a Cambridge offer?
You apply for Gates Cambridge funding inside your Cambridge course application, before any offer decision. Cambridge admits you to the course and considers you for Gates Cambridge funding through the same review process, so there is no separate post-offer scholarship round.
Does your choice of Cambridge college affect your chances?
No. Gates Cambridge funding decisions run separately from college admission, and your college choice does not affect your Gates Cambridge review.
