Indonesia's school system runs SD for six years, SMP for three years, then SMA or SMK for three more, for twelve years total before university, the same structure US high school graduates complete. Your Ijazah SMA or SMK, the leaving certificate your school issues at graduation, is treated as equal to a US high school diploma by credential evaluators and admissions offices.

At university level, a Sarjana (S1) degree takes four years and maps to a US bachelor's degree. A Magister (S2) takes two years and maps to a US master's degree. A Doktor (S3) takes three years and maps to a US doctorate. Most Indonesian universities already grade coursework on an IPK (Indeks Prestasi Kumulatif) scale of 0 to 4.00, close enough to the US GPA scale that many admissions offices read it directly without conversion.

When You Actually Need a Credential Evaluation

Not every application needs a formal evaluation. Many undergraduate programs review your Ijazah and rapor directly, especially when you also submit standardized test scores. A separate evaluation becomes necessary more often for graduate admission, for professional licensing paths such as nursing or engineering, and any time a school's application instructions specifically ask for a course by course or document by document report. Read each program's international applicant page closely, since the requirement is set school by school, not nationally. Nursing applicants pursuing US licensure typically need a separate credential review through CGFNS rather than a standard NACES evaluation, so check your target state's board of nursing for its specific requirement.

If You Studied on a Vocational or Polytechnic Track

Indonesia also runs Diploma programs at polytechnics and some universities. Diploma Tiga (D3) takes three years, and Diploma Empat (D4, also called Sarjana Terapan) takes four years. Evaluators generally treat a D3 as partial or associate level credit and a D4 as equal to a bachelor's degree, but practice differs between evaluation agencies. Ask your chosen NACES member how it classifies your specific credential before you order a report, especially if you plan to apply directly to a US master's program on the strength of a D4.

Choosing a NACES Member Evaluator

When a school asks for an outside evaluation, use a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Every member agency follows the same professional standards, so an evaluation from any of them satisfies schools that specify a NACES member without naming one. Some schools instead accept members of the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Check which association your target school names before you order a report, since not every evaluator belongs to both.

Evaluation services offer a few report types. A basic document by document report confirms your degree and its US equivalent. A course by course report also converts each individual grade, which some graduate programs require to calculate an equivalent GPA. Order the type your school's instructions name, since a basic report will not satisfy a request for course by course detail.

Documents to Send the Evaluator

• Ijazah for each completed level (SMA/SMK, and Sarjana if evaluating a bachelor's degree).

• Official transcript or rapor showing every semester and grade.

• SKPI or transcript supplement, where your university issues one.

Most evaluators want documents sent directly from your school, or a sealed copy you have not opened, rather than a photo or scan you send yourself. Contact your Indonesian university's academic office early, since sealed transcripts sometimes take weeks to prepare, especially outside the main enrollment period.

Getting an Accurate English Translation

Many NACES member evaluators translate your documents as part of the evaluation service, so check this before you pay a separate translator. If a school asks for a translation without a full evaluation, use a certified translator, someone who signs a statement confirming the translation is complete and accurate, since schools generally reject a translation you produce yourself even if you are fluent in English.

How Long Evaluation Takes

Processing time varies by evaluation agency and by season, so check the current stated turnaround on your chosen evaluator's own website before you plan around it. Add time on top for your Indonesian school to prepare and send a sealed transcript, since that step alone can take several weeks depending on the office and time of year. Order your evaluation as soon as you decide to apply, not after an admission deadline is already close.

Reading Your Evaluation Report

A finished report states your Indonesian credential, its US degree equivalent, and, for course by course reports, a converted GPA. Send the report directly to each school that requested one, following that school's submission instructions exactly, since some want it mailed by the evaluator and others accept a PDF you upload yourself.

Common Mistakes That Delay Evaluation
